If you are in your mid 40s and cannot find anything new to listen to ( like me) this CD is pure nostalgia. Whereas many 70s US soul groups were rather sickly for UK tastes Blue Magic were very acceptable. Whether on the dance floor or for late night sophisticated easy listening this is a great CD.The most under rated US soul/disco group on this side of the Atlantic.

Featuring 20 of the groups best known tracks this album is a good career overview of what 'Blue Magic' achieved over the years. The fact that most of these tunes sound pleasant rather than essential and that the group's biggest hit, 'Sideshow', was originally submitted to Thom Bell as a song for The Stylistics pretty much tells the story however of why Blue Magic failed to hit the big time in the way that The Stylistics did.

This said, classic 70's soul tracks like 'Spell', Three Ring Circus', 'What's Come Over Me' and 'Stop To Start' do have a magic all of their own and will delight fans of Thom Bell style 70's ballads. 'Welcome To The Club' is the best uptempo song here (of few) and is of interest to collectors because of its 'early disco' sounding arrangement. 'Look Me Up' is also a nice mid-tempo conga bopping song and 'Chasing Rainbows', a sad song with a cheery arrangement, is the best of the latter tracks.

All of the above are well worth owning/downloading but the problem with this CD as an album listen is that at over 70 minutes there are also a lot of mediocre songs on show here. While none are absolutely awful, a killer CD of ten or eleven of the bands truly greatest songs would have been much better. As this collection shows, the longer the band were together the less essential their output became as times and tastes changed...

So then, some beautiful songs, some wonderful 70's harmonies and (in some cases) some great songs to match The Stylistics but not an essential listen from start to finish.

7 out of 10.

Sideshow is one of the greatest, most beautiful sweet soul tunes you'll ever hear. Worth the ticket price alone. What's Come Over Me is also fabulous. Great stuff.

Great CD from a group who never really hit the big time here or in the US but still produced a couple of classics:
Side Show & Life Is A Three Ring Circus - both covered by the pop reggae artist Barry Biggs - but sounded pretty good here.
If you like the Stylistics but found them a little sugary, then you should like this.
