Better than Otis Redding and Percy Sledge?,
By
This review is from: The Soul of O.V. Wright (Audio CD)
Between 1964 and 1972 O.V. Wright recorded 4 albums and a handfull of singles for Duke/Peacock's subsidary Back Beat. In this period Wright made his best records (do not forget to listen to his Goldwax single "That's how strong my love is" also from 1964 available on the "The Goldwax Story Vol 1). Wright's voice is sowewhere between Percy Sledge and Otis Redding, and as soulful as both if not even more. Is that possible; having a more soulful voice than Percy 'when a man loves a woman' Sledge and Otis 'try a little tenderness' Redding. I never considered this possible, but Wright's voice cuts even deeper in your heart/soul (or wherever it hurts when you hear great music) than anyone else's on tracks as " A nickel and a dime" and "He's my son". Wright's voice is on this album the perfect mix of powerful delivery and sheer vulnerability which make O.V. Wright one of the great voices in the history of (Southern/Deep) Soul. So anyone who likes the great and well known voices in soul music should listen to O.V. Wright.

Giant Of Soul,
By
This review is from: The Soul of O.V. Wright (Audio CD)
O V Wright would not normally be one of the first names mentioned in any debate on the greatest of all soul singers but he is surely up there with them all. Originally signed to the legendary Memphis label Goldwax, Wright was found to have a prior contract with Duke Robey's Peacock and was 'persuaded' by Robey to cut his ties with Goldwax. This did him no harm however as he proceded to record some of soul music's finest sides. Backed by a classic organ dominated rhythm the gospel trained Wright laid down some of the most impassioned vocals in the entire soul canon. Cuts such as A Nickel And A Nail and Id Rather Be Blind Crippled And Crazy testify to this most gifted of singers. By all accounts O V was a difficult and troubled man and died prematurely in 1980. If you have even a passing interest in Deep Soul, I implore you to buy this. Then, please write your own review and help spread the word.

Unbelievable Music,
This review is from: The Soul of O.V. Wright (Audio CD)
If the only track on this album was Everybody Knows (The River Song) it would still be worth twice the price. This is soul at its very best. You may not have heard of O.V Wright, but you have heard of Otis Redding and Wilson Picket and believe me this guy is every bit as good. Buy it, and as another reviewer said, spread the word.
