Wise Counsel from the Soul of Supervision 28 Feb 2011
By Kathryn O'Connell Cleary - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Wise Counsel from the Soul of Supervision
The Soul of Supervision, edited by Margaret Benefiel and Geraldine Holton, is both illuminating and practical. The book offers a profound synthesis of contemplative spirituality, organizational dynamics and managerial technique. Drawing from a broad range of authors from the United States and Ireland, this book is a helpful and inspiring compendium for anyone engaged in spiritual direction, pastoral counseling, chaplaincy or organizational leadership. I highly recommend The Soul of Supervision.

The Importance of Supervision for so many Professions! 3 Mar 2012
By Mary Ann Connolly, SC - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
The Soul of Supervision arrived the other day and I have been "glued" to it ever since. Its insights, research, and reflections touched me deeply. I never thought about supervision as being so far reaching in so many professions. I have been greatly enlightened by the book.

Supervision from many frameworks 23 April 2011
By Avid reader - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
Margaret Benefiel and Geraldine Holton, editors of this book have engaged writers in both Ireland and the United States, working to uncover the soul in supervision. They clearly draw on Christian values but seek to invite the voices of all experience into reflection on the wisdom that can be drawn from a contemplative stance enhanced by critical reflection.
It begins with chapters that examine Reflective Practice and then moves to various supervision styles such as ministerial leadership, pastoral supervision, clinical pastoral education and includes my interest, supervision of spiritual directors. I see the authors seeking to glean from each of these forms of supervision and their individual richness. It's a gift to hold these various disciplines together for reflection!
As Michael Carroll suggests in the introduction the book is first about a philosophy of supervision, followed by a theology of supervision undergirded by a theme of spirituality, and then focuses on pastoral supervision and ministry through a reflective method.
I read this book through the lens of a supervisor of spiritual directors. If one is looking from that perspective there are articles by Conroy and Ruffing that may be helpful to flesh out the uniqueness of supervision of spiritual directors versus other models. I found the Ruffing's work to be more illuminating. I still long for a book that will seriously consider the absolute uniqueness of working with spiritual directors in supervision.
This book could be very helpful to introduce people to supervision practice of many kinds. It will help the reader view the variety of ways supervision is engaged and especially deepening the understanding of the gift that the soul offers.
