Product Description

CD Description

* The mid-to-late 60s produced an explosion of Latin soul, emanating a few blocks east of Harlem's Apollo Theater in East or Spanish Harlem. This compilation features the sweet harmony sounds of artists from the area - including Joe Bataan, Ralphi Pagan, the Lebron Brothers and a host of unknowns who recorded for labels such as Fania, Cotique and Speed. It also includes rare 45s by Parrish and 125th Street Candy Store.

* It gathers up some of the rarest and most sought after recordings of the era, including three-figure singles by Frankie Nieves, Tony Middleton and Harvey Averne which are collected by dancers, as well as Olivieri and Ralphi and the Latin Lovers which are sought-after by vocal group fans. Other tracks come from very rare and hard-to-find LPs such as `El Solitario' by King Nando and `Blackout' by Monguito Santamaria. BGP have included two previously unreleased tracks - one by Ray Jay and the Eastsiders which will have the soul boys baying for more and one by the Nitty Sextette, a Latin super-group that included Tito Puente and Jimmy Sabater.

* The booklet features a wealth of rare or previously unseen memorabilia and photographs from the labels and artists. The sleeve notes are built on a series of in-depth interviews with several of the key players. They tell the story of a unique and very brief period in the history of Latin music in America. A story with the sweetest of soundtracks.

5.0 out of 5 stars Priceless!, 2 Feb 2009

This review is from: The Soul Of Spanish Harlem (Audio CD)
For anyone who has an abiding love for the kind of latino soul that was unique to New York in the 60s, this is a CD you simply must have. A heavenly concoction of bugaloo, mambo, r'n'b and salsa, with strong undercurrents of both Jackie Wilson and Frankie Lymon, not to mention a seasoning of the street corner doo-wop that found its most perfect expression in the latin neighbourhoods of the Big Apple, this 20 track treasure is very likely to take up permanent residence in your CD player for many months to come.

Given special access to the vaults of the legendary Fania label as well as the personal collection of the great Bobby Marin, the BGP imprint of Ace records have come up with yet another top quality product. Popular performers such as Joe Bataan, the Lebron Brothers, Ralfi Pagan, Parrish and 125th Street Candy Store rub shoulders with comparatively little known artists such as Ralphi & the Latin Lovers and Olivieri. Throw in some ultra rare waxings by Frankie Nieves, Tony Middleton, Bobby Matos and the Harvey Averne Dozen and you have a lovingly crafted collection that documents a brilliant moment in pop history.

More please!

5.0 out of 5 stars BGP do it again !, 6 May 2009
By
This review is from: The Soul Of Spanish Harlem (Audio CD)
Another great comp from Dean Rudland and the BGP gang that proudly fields a whole bunch of vintage latin grooves that sound new and fresh to my ears.

Many of the cheaper comps seem to endlessly recycle tunes from a set list that sees the same song cropping up time and again. Not with this album ! BGP really have a talent for releasing exceptional compilations and it's nice to see one of my favourite genres getting this treatment. I really do hope this album marks the start of a new series.

Three of my favourites songs that nicely represent the album are:"Central Park", "Same Old Sad Song" "Nitty Boo Boo"

Various Artists - The Soul Of Spanish Harlem (BGP / Ace Records)
The latest in a long line of excellent soul collections to emerge from BPG / Ace, The Soul Of Spanish Harlem compiles the explosion of Latin soul that sprang from East Harlem in the mid to late 1960s.

Many of the tracks are ultra rare recordings that sold poorly at the time of their original release and have been sought out by collectors ever since. I can't say Latin Soul features heavily in my record collection, which is one of the reasons I appreciate what compiler Dean Rudland has done here. Ralphi Pagan's "Ain't No Big Thing" breaks the ice with a certified floor filler, but you'll find yourself moving around the parquet to most of the stuff here. The majority of the bands and artists represented were of Cuban and Puerto Rican extraction, and they bring a wealth of influences to these recordings, but without forgetting the huge shadows cast by Stax and Motown.

Put it on at a party and be prepared to answer eager enquiries. Fortunately, thanks to Rudland's informative sleevenotes, I know a considerable bit more about Latin soul than I did a week ago and, as with all BGP / Ace releases, the sound and overall presentation is first class. 8/10.
