Amazon.co.uk Review

Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver tells the story of Raziel, one of the undead lieutenants of the vampire lord Kain. Jealous of Raziel's newly evolved wings, Kain tears them apart and casts his former champion into the netherworld. But a powerful entity that dwells in the netherworld has restored Raziel to a semblance of life and has set him on a path of vengeance.

After this tantalising movie introduction, you take control of Raziel in the spectral realm, where your new existence is explained to you. From there you enter the physical plane, ready to begin your quest for power and revenge.

Raziel's combat moves are extremely brutal, as you'd expect from a vampire who has returned from the dead. When he finds a spear, Raziel gleefully stabs and slashes before he impales his foe, lifts it off the ground, and feasts on its soul. Doing so enhances Raziel's power, and devouring the souls of the rest of Kain's lieutenants is the only way to get the special abilities--scaling walls, phasing through gates, etc.--needed to reach Kain himself. While fun for adults, parents should take note: this game is definitely not suitable for kids. --John Cocking

5.0 out of 5 stars WOW!!!! 29 Nov 2000
What can i say. the graphics were good, the plot was brilliant, and basically the whole game was brilliant! the story line to this game really has you caught up as you go through different levels, facing your vampuric brothers. You play this game as Raziel a once very powerful vampire, until kain (your master) throws you into the abyss, but Kains days are numbered from that moment on as Raziel after thousands of years is risen from the dead and tries to find a way to rid the world of your ex-master and brothers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Neck Biting Fun! 7 July 2000
By A Customer
This game has everything, from great graphics, sound and animation to an engrossing storyline and atmosphere. If you like long games with Vampires, Tomb Raider style gameplay (only loads better) and a lot of puzzles to solve then this is the game for you.
It is easy control, has loads of cool weapons and action - where else can you impail your enemy on a spike or throw them off a cliff, and is taxing enough to let you stop and think every now and then.
Visually very impressive while being very ugly, but gothic settings are meant to be ugly and suits the nature of this game perfectly. The character models are excellent and move very realistically. The tunes are eerie and fit the game perfectly, whilst the excellent voice acting will send shivers down your spine.
Excellent, buy it now!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent game. 24 Mar 2008
Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
This game introduced me to the Legacy of Kain series, I've since played through Blood Omen, Blood Omen 2, Soul Reaver 2 and Deviance but I have to say this is still my favourite out of all five games. As with all the Legacy of Kain games its has a superb story line, great enemies and awesome locations, also great replay value. A worthy addition to any collection of games.

4.0 out of 5 stars Raziel on Dreamcast looks cool! 9 Sep 2000
By A Customer
Legacy Of Kain: Soul Reaver makes its way onto Dreamcast with a bang, being improved over previous versions and maintaining its playability. Improvements include hi- res textures, remodeled characters, and now 50/60 frames per second (60fps on VGA). If you have played Soul Reaver before you will love this version, it is definitly the best version, and more fun. If you haven't then here's how it goes, following on after Blood Omen:Legacy Of Kain, Soul Reaver puts you incharge of Raziel a vampire who was damned by Kain for surpassing him by invertently growing wings. Still spiritualy alive in the abyss and being guided by the elder god, Raziel must make his way to Kain to cast his vengeance. Using two world types, spectral and material, Raziel must make his journey as quick and as easily as possible, but unforunatly it is not that simple, many tasks need Raziel to 'flick' between the two worlds to continue, very clever. When in material world you can interact with items and you get tougher enemies, but in spectral world you can earn moves by beating bosses, and you can walk in water and through gates. As cool as all this sounds the game is very explorative and can really wear you down when you get on, the bosses are quite imaginitive but not too much of a challenge. Overall Legacy Of Kain:Soul Reaver is a very good game, very imaginitive with good ideas, but unfortunatly feels cut short. For a good price it should be tried out, especially for you gothic adventurers.

2.0 out of 5 stars A disappointing effort 29 July 2001
This game has an interesting story, but unfortunately not much else. The FMV's are well done and the voice-acting is fantastic. However, the bland textures and level design fail to recreate the atmosphere introduced by the story. Most of the puzzles will have you pushing blocks around a room, but some are more intelligent and require that Raziel, the protagonist, shifts between planes to progress. There is a lot of backtracking involved when playing through this vast game. You will find yourself annoyed when you can't find your next castle or dungeon. This game feels like a chore to play, except when you're facing the impressive bosses. Raziel's large, vampiric brethren are challenging, and you'll have to utilize the environment in several ways to dispose of them. But, besides the bosses and the story this game only offers a couple of hours of annoyance and boredom. I'm sorry...
