Format:Paperback
Having read the other reviews, it looks as though most people didn't like getting sidetracked by the whole Anderith subplot. To be honest, I loved it. It was certainly a refreshing change, although it did seem to make the book slightly out of place with the rest of the series thus far.
I didn't find that a problem at all. And whilst the Chimes were never 'tangible', per se, I don't think they were ever meant to be the major "bad-guy". Instead, they were just something that Richard had to deal with instead of getting ot the root of the problem.
So that wasn't my problem either - what was my problem, was Kahlan (and possibly Cara, too).
After all that's happened in the previous books, after everything Kahlan has been through not just with material enemies, but with good and bad spirits (like Darken Rahl and the ever-present Keeper), she decides, for some reason, that she isn't going to believe in bad spirits anymore, and rubbishes Richard's worries about them. Even when people die mysteriously, and when she's given all the clues under the Sun, and a man who seems to be able to understand and accomplish everything ever possible (Richard) warns her, she still doesn't believe.
That was truly apalling story-telling.
But it gets much better towards the end. This may not be the best in the series, but I enjoyed (most of) it nonetheless 8)

I really enjoyed the previous books and even though there is a lot of pain and suffering by the hands of some quite evil people, the end of the books always let good triumph leaving me satisfied and hungry for the next adventure.
Firstly I just have to say that I was astounded at all the spelling mistakes and incorrect words throughout the book. It may have just been the kindle edition that this was an issue for, but it is quite something for a book to get through all the editorial proof reads and still hold so many mistakes!
The storyline was alright.. it was captivating for the most part and you got a good feeling for all the characters that appeared in the book to give it a great depth, but there were cases where Goodkind did reiterate himself and seemed to fall into the trap of over analysing a lot of detail about something quite unimportant. It felt like filler to pad the book out. Also, Kahlan's point of view and argumentative nature in this book were a surprise to me. After the history and the way she conducted herself in the previous books, the issues that made her unhappy seemed a bit confused and irrational. To show her more personal nature, a bit more thought could have been taken into the way she objected to things as it didn't seem to make much sense and also kind of glossed over considering the ending.
Overall, this book was good - a bit like wading through mud at times, but I am still very much waiting for the next book to appear on my kindle so I can carry on this saga. After writing so many in a series, its no wonder that one may have scraped the barrel!

Format:Mass Market Paperback
I read up to book 6 in the series (Faith of the Fallen) about 10 years ago when I first discovered this fantasy author.
Just re-reading it now some of the newer books in the series are out to see if it is worthwhile buying the later additions to the series.
I too feel as though this story could have been wrapped up in at most six books and still been an epic fantasy. It seems the norm now that these authors fill page after page with dull events and sub-plots just to eke the series out to the maximum number of books. I mean twelve books!!! each containing on average 600 pages.
I'm sorry Terry but I don't think I will be buying any more of the series. I did plan to but paperbacks are just too expensive these days and nothing I have read in these reviews convinces me that it would be worthwhile to do so.
