Elijah rockin' with (even more) soul... 10 Jun. 2014
By Christopher (o.d.c.) - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
At the core of this great Northern Soul comp are three tracks which exemplify the appeal of "Money" records, a small LA label whose releases sold in the Dolphin record shops from 1964 to 1976.
Track 10 is by the M&Ms and the Peanuts (what a name!)- "Lil Valley." Although released in 1964, that very first verse: "With a black mustache and a satin sash.." evokes the Coasters' "Down in Mexico." while on the other hand, its somewhat incoherent account of a gang fight looks ahead to "Boys N the Hood": "They like to hip and they like to jive- but don't let that fool you 'cause they're qualified."
Track 11 "Separation," by King Solomon, is a version of "You Don't Love Me," both rhythmic and bluesy.
Track 12 is an extended version of "Elijah Rockin' with Soul," written by Bettye Swann and performed by Hank Jacobs, a very hip instrumental based on a spiritual- not just a longer take, but with a flipped out "party section" in the middle. It might remind you of "The In Crowd," only way more 'in.'

Nearly every track is superb, "Try My Love," to name another, really stomps. Only a so-so cover of "There Goes My Baby,"(hitherto kept in the can) and a few other under-arranged ballads seem half-hearted. The notes and artist photos are of Kent's usual high quality.
