Format:Audio CD
If you've stumbled across Curtis through following artists of a similar genre then you have probably just found what you were originally looking for. Listening to his vocals it's easy to hear the undertones of ghetto pain and the lyrics are always soulfully conscious. As for this compilation.........its always best to go for the definitive collection so you dont miss out on "hidden" gems............

This is a real treat. Normally, I'd prefer a chronological order for a boxed set, but in this case, I am fully persuaded by the ordering according to 4 themes:
(1) Inspirational themes, (2) Love songs, (3) Cautionary tales, and (4) Film & Dance. It works! Ultimately, it's all Curtis that we're getting with his distinctive high voice, but it's a nice way to create some order in his musical legacy. He was one of the true innovators of soul music in the '70s (together with Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder & James Brown). Clear civil rights movement themes ("People get ready"), go hand in hand with great love songs ("Fool for you"), hard-hitting cautionary tales ("If there's hell below, we all gonna go"), and timeless film & dance music ("Superfly"). A mid-priced box set with 60+ minutes of great music on each of the 4 CDs. A great way to get his best material for a reasonable price.

Judging from the image which has been used, this is the four-cd box set retrospective of Curtis Mayfield's career. Even if the Charly packaging is a little on the cheap side, the musical content is tremendous.
Features four themed compact discs:
1.Inspirational themes
2.Love songs
3.Cautionary tales
4.Film & Dance
Each has a generous running time, and the overall package represents terrific value-for-money. The content is virtually unimpeachable, drawing in selections from Curtis' numerous album releases. And it succeeds, for me, in not overdoing the number of Impressions tracks. There's even a decent booklet.
One slight criticism would be the use of a few edit versions, probably making it necessary to buy one or two albums. ("Curtis", in particular.) Similarly, there's not quite enough of "Superfly". But that's another of Curtis Mayfield's must-have albums, as we all know.
However, this remains a thoroughly satisfying retrospective and an extremely worthwhile purchase.
