Vocalist Philip Bailey has collaborated with producer/arrangers Bob Belden, Myron McKinley and Scott Kinsey on his latest recording for Heads Up. They have taken classic jazz tunes from Thelonious Monk, Joe Zawinul, Herbie Hancock and others, which have been re-worked to express the Bailey's jazz sensibilities combined with his very soulful voice.
As one of the founding members and lead vocalists for Earth, Wind & Fire, Philip Bailey has been creating hit after hit for three decades. He has slipped effortlessly between a variety of musical grooves - R&B, soul, jazz, funk and more. Apart from EWF, his solo projects have encompassed pop, gospel and contemporary jazz.
This recording features jazz greats, Ronnie Cuber, Lou Marini, Ira Coleman, Don Alias and others on a well-crafted collection of jazz compositions - classics in most instances - and all with a contemporary soul spin. Bringing it all right up-to-date is a special appearance by DJ Smash on his own composition, "Bop-Skip-Doodle". 'Soul On Jazz' is the latest chapter in Bailey's 30-year quest to keep searching for new and innovative approaches to musical expression.
