Following closely on Jasmine's THE GENIUS IN PERSON - JOURNEY THROUGH THE EARLY ALBUMS 1957 - this new release delves into Ray's superb output from the early Sixties when he moved to ABC-Paramount and recorded material suitable for a mainstream audience.
The first disc includes two albums recorded in 1960 with THE GENIUS HITS THE ROAD dedicated to journeying through America with ALABAMY BOUND, MISSISSIPPI MUD, CALIFORNIA HERE I COME and DEEP IN THE HEART OF TEXAS heading through States and towns. Issued as a single, GEORGIA ON MY MIND hit high in the US and UK Charts. No wonder, with Ray's energetic vocals fused with conductor Ralph Burns exciting arrangements, the album conquered the US Album Charts at #9. Jasmine has suitably added Ray's hit single HIT THE ROAD JACK to the travelling mood. DEDICATED TO YOU retains a similarly tight concept by featuring female names so HARD HEARTED HANNAH and SWEET GEORGIA BROWN begin and end songs dedicated to the charms of MARGIE, CANDY, MARIE and especially RUBY, which issued as a single, reached #28 in the US pop charts. This time around the talented Marty Paich supplied the varied arrangements.
The second CD opens with GENIUS+SOUL=JAZZ - a #4 Billboard hit (1961) which presented a hot and heavy jazz inspired idea of Ray playing a Hammond B3 organ and occasionally providing vocals with Ralph Burns and Quincy Jones sharing the arrangements which provides terrific big-band enjoyment. In contrast, RAY CHARLES & BETTY CARTER, released the same year, is a terrific get-together of the up-front Ray with the cool Betty as they meander through PEOPLE WILL SAY WE'RE IN LOVE, SIDE BY SIDE, BABY IT'S COLD OUTSIDE and TAKES TWO TO TANGO. In fact, both singers vocally tap the best of each other and it's a match made in Heaven! This has always been a favourite album of mine so I can now rave about it being in this collection!
Delighted to report Jasmine does the right thing by setting the individual albums as originally issued instead of the annoying habit of shaking tracks and allowing them to fall in random order over two discs. Excellent notes accompany with great remastered sound throughout.Read more ›
