Product Description

Amazon.co.uk

The crate raiders at Harmless have something of a predilection for albums which orientate themselves with a titular theme. This latest offering picks the not completely incongruous Soul Food connection as its raison d'être. While James Brown exhorts his band to "Pass the Peas" in the opening track of the same name, the selectors behind this compilation of funk and soul venture far beyond the usual well-worn realms, with the expected Kool and the Gang and Booker T sharing disc space with lesser known names. Junior Walker, Obie Plenty and Three Pieces offer fine testament to the respective delights of "Home Cooking", "Beef Stew" and "Shortnin' Bread". It is left to Raynel Wynglas to steal the show, however, after he has freed his suspiciously gruff-voiced Geraldine from the stove for a night on the town. Despite the tenuous premise, those looking for a stomach-rumbling, appetite-whetting soundtrack to sun-soaked barbeques could do far worse than pick up this serving of soul. --Kingsley Marshall
