More About the Author

Kate Harrison is the author of fourteen fiction and non-fiction books, including The 5:2 Diet Book, The Secret Shopper's Revenge, and the Soul Beach trilogy for teenagers.

Kate was born in north-west England, and moved home more than a dozen times as a child. Despite writing many 'novels' at school (including a four-part thriller set in Paris), her careers officer told her she'd never make a living from stories, so instead she became a journalist at the BBC, working on news and current affairs programmes including Newsround and Panorama.

In 2003, she proved her careers teacher wrong, and published her first novel, Old School Ties. Since then, she's written more novels for adults (including The Secret Shopper series about undercover shopping, and The Boot Camp about extreme fitness!). Her thriller series for teenagers, Soul Beach, is creepier and more chilling, with a murder mystery and a frightening website to be explored (

In 2012, Kate set up a Facebook group with friends following a fasting diet, and later that year, she combined her own experiences and recipes, plus the group members' own tips, in The 5:2 Diet Book, which became a Kindle and print bestseller, and has now been published all over the world. Her Ultimate 5:2 Recipe Book contains delicious recipes and meal plans, plus stories from people whose lives have been transformed by intermittent fasting. In 2013, she published 5:2 Your Life, which explores how making tiny changes on just two days each week can make you happier as well as healthier!

She's currently working on her next adult and YA novels, as well as experimenting with more 5:2 recipes. Kate loves to cook, to read and to travel. She's lived in the Netherlands and Spain, before settling by the seaside in Brighton on the south coast of England with her partner.

5.0 out of 5 stars A brilliant sequel. 26 July 2012
Soul Fire is a brilliant sequel to Soul Beach. I even liked it more than the first one. Soul Fire is full of suspense making the reader grip on to the pages, looking for clues to who really is the killer. It really is a mystery and there are a few hints but we only know what Alice does. There are so many twists in this and so many suspects that there is no one you can trust. Alice struggles to trust anything her so called friends say, and with a nagging feeling someone is following her, she knows time's running out before that someone makes a pounce on her. I really love Soul Fire, you could see how the author has developed as a writer between the two books and this one is definitely stronger. Soul Fire is a fast paced mystery full of unexpected twists that leaves the reader feeling like a detective, trying to piece the clues together. These books really pull the reader deep into the story.

Soul Fire joins Alice nearly a year after her sisters death. Alice still visits Soul Beach but both worlds are rocked when Tim, Meggie's boyfriend turns up dead. Even more confusing is he lands on Soul Beach. Alice knows there's a connection between the two deaths and she knows that the killer is getting closer. Upon Tim's death she stumbles across a website about Tim and Meggie, the host is convinced that Tim is innocent. Alice is shocked that there is someone else out there who also believes Tim is innocent. With the help of Lewis she tries to track the website host down. Meanwhile on the beach someone wants Alice's help and she won't refuse.

I liked Alice more in this book, she's so lost and sees everyone as suspicious, she doesn't know who she can trust. Her parents want her life to go back to normal so she begins hanging out with her old friend Cara.

4.0 out of 5 stars I long for my next visit to this beach! 18 July 2012
By Serendipity Reviews TOP 1000 REVIEWER
The thing I really love about the Soul Beach books is how easily I can consume them. Seriously! With short sharp chapters, I could easily read this book in one day, which just adds to the intensity of the already gripping story.
Nearly a year has passed since Meggie's murder and Alice's parents finally realise that Alice is spending far too much time online. They have no idea that she is wiling away her time on Soul Beach in the arms of the gorgeous but dead Danny. By setting down rules, Alice has to find another way to get to Soul Beach. On top of that, a newcomer to Soul beach has changed everything about Meggie's murder. Alice embarks on a rather dangerous mission to discover who really killed her sister.
Poor Alice, she is really struggling to appear to move on in the way her parents want. Luckily her friend Cara, comes to the rescue and helps to rekindle the relationship. Alice is finally getting out of the house and spending time with people who are alive.
I really do love Soul Beach. The concept behind it really calls to me and I honestly hope that a part of Heaven resembles something like this. It is just gorgeous. Everyone is just beautiful,on the inside and out and you long for a dip in the sparkling blue ocean. Not content with just one gorgeous setting in this book, the author takes us to another as we embark on a thrilling adventure in Barcelona. I came away with a yearning for the exotic. Barcelona has definitely been added to my list of future holiday destinations.
It is impossible to warm to any of the other characters outside of Soul Beach, as you don't want to be lulled into a false sense of security and be ridiculed when you discover they are the murderers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Taking the suspense up a level 31 July 2012
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Soul Fire follows on from soul beach and other reviewers have covered the plot twists and turns already so i won't repeat that, but I will say that THIS BOOK IS BRILLIANT!! Alice is still no closer to finding her sister's killer, but the killer is getting closer to her... The suspense goes up a level and I really enjoyed the way the author teased me in making me keep changing my mind about who the killer is. I've still sticking with my initial hunch from book one though! This second book in the trilogy was even better than the first so I can't wait to find out what Kate Harrison will do with Alice and Meggie in the last one.

It was clear following Soul Beach that the mystery of Meggie's murder is not going to be resolved until the end of the trilogy. This book narrows down the suspects, while providing compelling reasons for you to think it can't be each of these suspects. The overall effect is teasing and intriguing. Again, like the first book, there are smaller plot threads which are tied up in this novel, while the big whodunnit is left for the grand finale. We also still have no clue how Soul Beach 'works' or what its purpose is. Why are only the young dead there? For those who leave, where do they go? Is the Beach some version of Limbo or Purgatory or something else entirely?

Alice develops as a character in the course of this novel, and it's easy to be on her side and root for her as she digs through evidence and theories to try to figure out who's responsible. Her parents worry about her immersion in the virtual world, creating a further complication when her laptop is confiscated 'for her own good'. Her relationships also develop further in this instalment, although there is much more focus on mystery and threat than romance.

As with Soul Beach, our narrator is Alice, ensuring we see everything from her perspective and are emotionally tied to her. This is broken only occasionally, with a passage from the murderer's point of view, showing us how much danger Alice is in as the murderer seems obsessed with her as well as Meggie. This is a tense read, and the fire theme is a good match for this level of intensity and potential danger.

Overall, I'd recommend this series and can't wait to see where it all ends up in the final book. I'm hoping that Soul Beach itself will give up its mysteries as well as the crime angle.
