FROM THE STUDIO THAT BROUGHT YOU FULLMETAL ALCHEMIST AND COWBOY BE-BOP Set in the Shinigami technical school for weapon meisters, the series revolves around 3 groups of each a weapon meister and a human weapon. Trying to make the latter a "Death Scythe" and thus fit for use by the Shinigami, they must collect the souls of 99 evil humans and 1 witch. Soul Eater is an anime that centers around meisters and their weapons and their mission to collect 99 evil souls and 1 witch soul. Upon doing that the meister's weapons will become a Deathscythe, which is the highest title for a weapon. Maka, Soul Eater, Black Star, Tsubaki, Death the Kid, and Patty and Liz Thompson are the characters Soul Eater revolves around. Besides taking the time to gather souls these students of Shibusen defend Death City from some of the most powerful of creatures while still attending school and trying to become stronger.

"A sound soul dwells within a sound mind and a sound body." If a soul becomes evil, it has the potential to turn into a demonic kishin -- which is when the meisters and their shapeshifting weapon/partners come in. "Soul Eater Parts 1 and 2" is a solid beginning to a well-written, deliciously Halloweeny fantasy series, with solid writing and a twisty-turny subplot that promises to get even better with time.

The meisters of the DWMA work for Lord Death to keep the world from being overrun with kishin -- they get rid of evil souls, kill monsters, battle witches, and try to collect souls so that their weapon/partners can become Death Scythes. Among their number are Maka and her scythe Soul Eater, narcissistic ninja Black Star and Tsubaki, and Death's OCD son Death the Kid and his twin pistols Patty and Liz.

But nabbing the right combination of evil souls isn't their only problem: they have to grapple with zombies, mad scientists, the legendary sword Excalibur, a vengeful werewolf, and the demon blade Masamune (who also happens to be Tsubaki's brother). Even worse, the meisters must battle the evil witch Medusa, who has infected Soul Eater with the madness-inducing black blood. Btu this little group may be the world's only hope when Medusa seals away Death and his meisters, so she can unleash the ultimate horror on the world.

"Soul Eater" is a series that looks kind of... well, cartoonish. Think bug-eyed trees, big grinning sun and moon, cats in pointy hats, and an academy apparently built out of skulls and candles. All it needs is some vampires. Fortunately, there's substance under all the Halloween kitsch -- "Soul Eater Parts 1 and 2" is a solid dark fantasy story that becomes outright brilliant in its second half.

I'm not going to review the series itself as it has been done before, but what I'll be focusing on is the picture quality, packaging and extras.

Packaging:
- It's packed with 8 discs in the case without one going over the other, superb!
- Features a reversible cover with the title of the episodes and Maka & Soul art.
- My copy came with the paper slipcover and as such it's so much nicer this bundle.

Picture Quality:
- In all fairness during the early DVDs the picture quality really lacks proper quality, but when we get halfway through the series has a huge improvement which actually impressed me and made me happy.

Audio Quality:
- DD 2.0 for Japanese audio (wish it was 5.1 too as it'd sounded better, at least it's not 1.0 thank goodness)
- DD 5.1 for English dub

Extras:
- Clean OP & ED
- Late Night Show Episodes
- Trailers

Overall, if you want to get a great Soul Eater collection just in one go then this is the one to go for!

I want to say it is awesome, I want to agree with the critics I want to make this the back bone of great animation but the more I try to think of it's flaws the more I think about how much hard work went into this anime compared to others.

Watched this online first, then a couple of months later bought this. Quality is very good, amazing compared to online, it came quickly, and once you're past the first 5-ish episodes, which are incredibly kooky, it's an epic storyline with deep characters and the fate of the world in the balance. Wait until it's at a low price though, Amazon changes its prices regularly, so buy it when it's incredibly unmissable, especially for 51 episodes. Basically watch it for ages, then get it at its cheapest.

Wish they did more of Soul Eater, but it's nice they ended it when it was at its very, very best, unlike many other animated series that drag on for eternity. Soul Eater's ending is flawless. A must watch for everyone.

It's funny, brilliant animation that made me constantly think about how many episodes I had left because I didn't want it to end. If you like Bleach, Naruto, Kiba, Death Note, Claymore, Wolf's Rain, Outlaw Star, Guran Lagann or any such animes, you would be mad not to give it a go. Then again if you don't want 17 straight hours of your life spent watching this series, walk away - scroll up this page and click on something else I am sure you'll 'accidentally' click on this eventually and then you can buy it then :P

While I don't own this box set I have all 4 volumes seperatley and I can honestly say that if you're an anime fan or just getting into anime that this is the series for you.
The artwork may not be as good as the likes of Angel Beats! but it is still good in its own way, the fight scenes are spectacular and the plot is near perfection bar a few bits that just randomly popped up at the end with no explaination into them.

I completely enjoyed watching this series and £[] is a very good price for all 51 episodes seeing as at the likes of hmv you're looking at £25 per volume.

An excellent Shonen. If you are not an anime fan this is a great jumping off point. It's accessable to those outside the anime-verse, it also reminds me of the shonen of my childhood... Except it has an acceptable episode count! The animation is gorgeous, the story is exciting and the characters are hilarious and charming (with the exception of Black Star but you'll warm up to him!)
If you are an anime fan, you should own this already!
If you are not an anime fan, give it a shot, who knows, you might find a new hobby.
