Review

'Johnston does an expert job in this extraordinary mixture of police procedural, head-banging vigilante lit, Agatha Christie…and Dennis Wheatley…Great stuff.' --The Guardian

'Captivating sequel to The Death List' --Daily Mirror

'The Soul Collector is clever in all the right ways: it s plotting is a little out of the box with it s mixture of all things serial killers; a touch of Golden Age puzzle solving (Colin Dexter would approve); a large dose of machismo bravado, and the emotional exploration of fledgling love. And as quickly as these elements are laid out, you know you are in the hands of a writer whose inventiveness continues to excite his readers. ' --Mike Stotter

Product Description

Furiously fast-paced, torturously tense, down-right-unputdownable - this is the shocking sequel to "The Death List". Having been singled out by a serial killer dubbed the 'White Devil', author Matt Wells knows what it's like to look evil in the face - and survive. Having re-built his life, he's never stopped looking over his shoulder, knowing a follower of his tormentor is still at large. When his best friend is murdered, Matt's paranoia appears well-founded, and he is racked with guilt. As cryptic clues to the next victim are sent to Matt, it is chillingly clear that his deadly dance with the devil has begun once more.Anyone that knows Matt is suddenly in mortal danger. And only he can save them...

Couldn't finish it 19 Nov 2008
Format:Paperback
I loved Paul Johnstons Death List, but was very disappointed in this, i was really looking forward to it. The writing is very poor and i cringed in a fair amount of places, All the rugby references and names like slash, pscho etc etc meant that i just couldnt read it any more. i may try and finish it one day, but there are many more books with a lot more promise than this.

Huge disappointment 3 July 2009
Format:Paperback
Honestly, even if you've enjoyed the first book as much as I did. I really recommend you DON'T bother with this. I thoroughly enjoyed The Death List which was a real page turner; I was up to gone 1am reading it. I so looked forward to this follow up. What a huge disappointment. I persevered because I loved the Death list and wanted to know what happened. Well it was beyond farfetched and I wish I hadn't wasted my time with it. I really find it difficult to believe that Matt would still carry on without the assistance of the police. It has been left possible for another follow up - if there is I shall not be reading it.

Despite the glowing reviews on the book cover (which is why I bought it) I found this to be a pretty dire piece of writing, with paper thin characters and about as much tension as a trip to Tesco. The big set-piece killings, which should really set the tone for the rest of the action, go for absolutely nothing. There's a complete lack of atmosphere or mood. The excess of matey chumminess (plus all the rugby stuff) made me wonder if the author had written it so that his pals could spot themselves in it. It didn't work as a serial killer, thriller or police procedural for me.
