Product Description

The silken voiced diva returns. Mica releases Soul Classics, a collection of the most celebrated and loved soul tracks, to which she brings her very special vocal magic originally recorded by male legends such as Marvin Gay, Sam Cooke, Al Green and Ray Charles. From the infectious "Let's Stay Together" to the sublime sound of "I Can't Stop Loving You" plus "You Send Me", "Amazing Grace" and "Tracks Of My Tears" Mica shows that she is a true soul great.

Michael K, you're talking out of your b*cks*ide a little bit regarding the production. As a recording engineer and record producer myself, I can tell you the production is OK - not brilliant, I grant you (many tracks seem to have exactly the same drum sounds) but overblown and superfluous production does not suit Mica's voice IMHO.

I too am one of her greatest fans but I have to agree that many of the songs do not suit her voice. (I wonder why she decided to do a project like this?) She should stick to doing some new and original tracks - perhaps find some new songwriting partners. Mica, I'm at your service!!

I've liked Mica for 25 years but until now had not bought this as I don't often like covers albums. I should have known better! (pun intended!)

I've never been much of an Elvis fan but have always liked "In the Ghetto" however in the numerous times I've heard it I've never listened to the story of the lyrics beyond knowing that a baby has been born in winter in the ghetto.

Perhaps thats my fault or perhaps its down to the way Elvis sings - his voocal sometimes sounds like an instrument, no offence intended.

Anyway Mica's rendition blew me away first time! Sung so clearly, plainly, and from the heart I certainly understand the story now!

OK so IMHO she improves on Elvis - anything else? Well yes. Not surprisingly (Mica is a true soul singer) she improves greatly on Diana Ross's vocal on Your gonna make me love you.

There is not one duff track on this album - a storming version of Standing in the Shadows of Love, a cover of What's Going On which I believe Marvin would have approved of and different more feminine versions of both Walk Away from Love and What becomes of the Broken Hearted.

Mica is one of those great artists like Bobby Womack,(with whom she cut a track in the nineties) whose contribution to soul music is much greater than sales figures would indicate - by the way having briefly met her a couple of times I can say she is also a lovely, down to earth human being

I absolutely agree with the other reviewers on this. Go and see Mica live if you want a musical experience verging on an epiphany (and certainly a very different one than you'll get from the same songs as they sound on her current album, Born Again). But, as far as her recordings go, Black Angel is just breathtaking. Make this your first stop and you won't regret it.
