4.0 out of 5 stars SoulCailbur Reborn!! 11 Feb 2012
Platform for Display:Xbox 360
Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
Soul Calibur V better than IV?
Yes and no, better story, fighting system look and feel than SCIV but loss of key characters, stories for ALL characters and lack of modes really make this bittersweet!

Okay, first things first, no question, the fighting engine is the best so far, with a new Brave Edge and Critical Edge system that riffs on Street Fighters EX and Ultras respectively. These (for me) are a welcome addition and a vast improvement on SCIV's awfully implemented Critical Finishes (admitted by the Namco Project Soul team themselves). Brave Edges essentially enhance standard special attacks giving them more damage, possibly a stun or knockdown, or even break through opponents guard! Critical Edges are flashy over the top special moves that work like Street Fighters Ultras, although the command input is the same for every character (which is good, in my opinion, because some of Street Fighter IV's Ultras are tricky command inputs!) you have a gauge that builds up whilst you give and take hits and you can choose to use it for a couple of Brave Edge moves or wait and go all out with a Critical Edge move, of which you can store 2.

The thing most people are complaining about is Story mode and the lack of offline modes.
Well, Story mode is good and bad in equal measure, good because it tells a story with a clear narrative (a little simple maybe).

5.0 out of 5 stars Gret Game overall 9 Feb 2012
Platform for Display:Xbox 360
Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
Well let me start with the gameplay in general, i think Namco has done an excellent job with this installment of the soul calibur series. Namco Bandai has definately out done themselves with with gameplay mechanics of SCV which includes an excellent implementation of super meter.

I see a lot of people complaining about a 2 hour story mode, where it is true that the story mode for this game is pretty barebones and unfinished the real gem that is souk calibur thrives in its online capabilities. the netcode for this game is abosolutley the best netcode of any fighting game that has been created up to the date of its release. There's no question about it. Also the character customisation feature of this game add a reall fun factor to it, especially after you see the CRAZY customisations online from Shao Kahn from mortal kombat to a scary bondage looking voldo.

Overall this game is really good if you're loking for a high quality fighter in yerms on gameplay.

3.0 out of 5 stars Pretty mediocre by Soul Calibur standards 12 July 2013
By KG
Platform for Display:Xbox 360|Verified Purchase
Fun: 3.0 out of 5 stars
I've followed the Soul Calibur franchise for years and have loved every single game they released. Soul Calibur 4 was particularly great, a game I can play again and again and rarely get bored of, with a fantastic character line up. So with that in mind, I was very excited to see what SC5 had to offer.

In all honesty, this game improves on nothing. Actually, let me correct that... the character creation feature has many improvements on SC4, but that isn't such a huge constellation for me when almost everything else seems to go South. The biggest two dissapointments in this game are 1) The Character line up and 2) Story Mode.

1) SC5 removes a lot of veteran characters: Sophitia, Cassandra, Taki, Seung Mina, Yun Seong, Talim, Rock, Zasalamel and Xianghua are all cut and replaced with a bunch of younger characters, most of which are offsprings that have similar weapon styles. You may ask why, if they have similar weapon styles and in some cases even look similar, it is an issue... well, having similar weapons and fighting styles doesn't mean they have similar personalities, and I found most of these characters really unlikable. They're either just plain annoying or downright hateful; the former being cases like Natsu, Leixia and Xiba; and the latter mainly being Patroklos and Pyrrah (who just so happened to be the two central characters, yipee!)

2) Now that I've mentioned these two awful characters, that brings me to story mode. Story Mode, rather than progressing, has basically degenerated in SC5. We are no longer able to play as the characters we choose and play out their story arc. This time round, it's all about the newbies; mainly Patroklos and Pyrrah- children of the far superior character who didn't make the game, Sophitia.

5.0 out of 5 stars Why I've found my new favorite game... 23 Feb 2012
Platform for Display:Xbox 360
Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
I'll try and keep this short and sweet:

+ Fighting is a lot more fluid and makes for fun battles.

+ More story, instead of just playing through with each character and getting a cut scene at the end, there's constant story throughout that links together many characters. though it is somewhat short. Still an improvement though.

++ CHARACTER CREATION: This was what did it for me. You can pretty much make anything you want. Anything. Moreover because equipment no longer has status effects (instead, you can make your character tall or short, trading off power or reach respectively) there are no longer "dud equipment" pieces that just aren't usable and you can use whatever you want without consequence. I have fun making my own characters or cosplaying other people/characters (which works a charm seeing as there's so much you can edit.

The only real bad point I can think of that applies only to this game in particular and not fighting games altogether is the lack of single player content. You really have to play online or with friends to appreciate this game.

Most definitely recommended.
