Biography

Biographyby by Richie Unterberger

While Solomon Burke never made a major impact upon the pop audience -- he never, in fact, had a Top 20 hit -- he was an important early soul pioneer. On his '60s singles for Atlantic, he brought a country influence into R&B, with emotional phrasing and intricately constructed, melodic ballads and midtempo songs. At the same time, he was ... Format: Audio CD
In the early 1960's, Solomon Burke along with Ray Charles and Sam Cooke, represented the first flowering of what we call Soul Music. Indeed it is said that he was the first person to use this descriptive term for this fusion of gospel, blues, and in his case, country. But fashions in music change and, unfortunately, in spite of often perfectly good records, Solomon found himself out of favour for a very, very, long spell up until his reincarnation via the Joe Henry produced, "Don't Give up on Me" in 2002.

But during that long lean period, Solomon Burke kept plugging away on the road. This double album which hales from performances in 1981, at the Phoenix 1 Club in Washington D.C. was taped, and there's a fascinating story on Wikipedia, on how the agreement with record label Rounder was made to release the tapes - the deal was closed, apparently, in a Chinese Restaurant! Eventually the album came out in '84. Given that this was still in said lean spell then, hardly surprisingly the release got little press attention (at least in the UK but I suspect also in the US) and probably didn't pop up in your local HMV. Or at least I didn't find it.

If you've not come across it before but are already a Burke fan then you'll already have an idea what this is like. I can assure you it doesn't disappoint. Buy it. What you won't be prepared for, unless you were one of those lucky enough to have seen the King on stage, are the long monologues (on everything you can think of) which appear in the Medley sections on the discs.

The music is almost all from the '61 to '64 Atlantic period. The First "Best of..." album covers much of it. Personally I can listen to this stuff time and time again.

One of The Finest Live Albums Ever Made 3 Mar 2000
By Anthony G Pizza - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
"I know there's something going on in this place that doing good for somebody!" shouts Solomon Burke early on in "Soul Alive," and he may have even understated the case. As with the best live albums (Sinatra, James Brown, the Stones, KISS), this set, recorded mostly in Washington, DC, captures a live soul experience as few others have(especially in the 80s, when it was released).
Many remember Burke from "Cry to Me," featured on the "Dirty Dancing" soundtrack. That hit is here, along with songs he ("The Price," "Everybody Needs Somebody To Love," "Tonight's The Night") or others ("I Can't Stop Loving You," "Hold What You Got," "He'll Have To Go.") recorded during soul's peak years. What makes this album special is that Burke, a preacher and gospel singer since childhood, weaves useful, emotional sermons around these medleys (his monologue about "the women of today" is hilarious and useful) giving the crowd and listener the best of the gospel and secular worlds. In doing so, Burke reversed - 40 years later - Ray Charles' use of gospel style in blues songs which angered, then inspired, fans of those genres. Every shout, every Burke one-liner ("All we need is a water bed now" ), every note of this set is to cherish. Highly recommended for fans of classic soul, gospel, or any other music genre.

I can remember hearing this as a child when my mom played it. His music is just as touching and real now, as it was all those years ago. I have just about everything Solomon has touched. He is most definitely a timeless wonder.

Stellar Soul Performance! 10 Oct 2010
By Why Not Dream - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
Solomon Burke died yesterday but the performance captured on this record will live on for many years.

During the course of the show, Solomon Burke, his band and the audience come together and the excitement builds to a climax by the time they reach the final medley and the encore.

The 1981-84 live shows on this record approach James Brown's famous Apollo show in 1962 and Otis Redding Live In Europe in 1967 -- the two masterpieces of live soul shows and excitement.

If you like good music, this is a performance you'll be glad you heard!

Highly Recommended!

EXCELLENT 25 May 2009
By BLACKBERRY COBBLER - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
This is Solomon at his best. I had this tape years ago and have played it so many times, and then I lost it. I went to Amazon to find another and ended up with the wrong one, which was the Platinum Collection, and I did not like it. I believe it was one done when he was younger. I think this is better quality and a darn good CD "Solomon Burke soul alive!" I stopped and had to play this CD a few minutes ago. You can't go wrong with this one. Buy it!

If you only by one soul album 30 Nov 2001
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
There is simply nothing like it. If you only buy one soul album - get this one. Discovered almost by accident, this recording will lift the spirits and comfort the soul. For those who don't know Solomon, check out his heart wrenching version of "I can't stop loving you". It has been said that Solomon Burke is the greatest soul singer of all time, even with a borrowed band. Check out Soul Alive and decide for yourself.
