Product Description

Product Description

After the success of his platinum-selling album Soul, Seal has now turned his attention to classic Seventies Motown records for the follow-up Soul 2. Bringing his recognisable voice to tracks such as Rose Royce’s "Wishing On A Star" and Bill Withers’ "Lean On Me".

BBC Review

Twenty-one years ago, in March 1990, a young British singer of Nigerian descent took the dance producer Adamski to number one on the UK singles chart with the still-striking track Killer. A year later, few pop fans had heard anything more from Adamski – but everyone knew about the vocalist, Seal. His eponymous debut LP, produced by Trevor Horn, went straight to number one, bagging a BRIT Award in 1992.

Since his massive commercial breakthrough, Seal hasn’t had to impress with sales – financially comfortable at an early stage of his career, he’s been able to express himself without fear of a critical savaging disrupting his mortgage payments. And he’s certainly taken a few knocks in the years between Killer and now – while 1994’s Seal (II) was great, the following Human Being was a letdown, and his third self-titled set fared little better. Come 2010’s sixth studio album Commitment, journalists had largely written the man off as an original pop force. But in 2008 there came something that did strike a chord with critics and consumers alike: an album of soul covers, simply titled Soul. It featured a pressure-free performer absolutely nailing cuts by the likes of Al Green, Otis Redding and Curtis Mayfield. That it’s now platinum in the UK, and was a top 20 hit on the Billboard 200 stateside, says much about its immediate appeal.

So Soul 2 is a rather inevitable follow-up, but it’s a welcome addition to the man’s catalogue: while it offers little in the way of surprises, these are 11 fine covers of fine songs by a fine singer. That Seal has a voice that can melt icecaps has never been doubted by his detractors – the problems with his material post-Seal (II) went deeper, to a basic songwriting level. Here, freed of the weight of his own emotions, he soars on a sublime Wishing on a Star (which manages to borrow its smoky backing from Sade’s Smooth Operator), and broods wonderfully on Let’s Stay Together. Later, he manages to take What’s Going On into new territories with a version that is remarkably close to rivalling Marvin Gaye’s original for jaws-on-the-floor first impressions – it’s a brilliant revision that pays tribute to Gaye while adding plenty of new appeal. An effortless cover of the Major Harris hit Love Won’t Let Me Wait shows off his evergreen vocals superbly – his 48 years haven’t dulled a single note.

Naturally there are rather more rudimentary numbers. The Spinners’ I’ll Be Around, Teddy Pendergrass’ Love T.K.O. and Bill Withers’ Lean on Me are tackled with accomplished poise, but the listener will still reach for the originals first. But there’s nothing bad to be said for Soul 2, and with Horn on production everything shines brightly like the first snowflakes of a new winter. Seal the songwriter might never hit the heights of the early 1990s again – but Seal the singer can still hold his own amongst today’s clutch of contemporary soul stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars Soul ...Sealed and impeccably delivered 13 Dec 2011
Format:Audio CD
Seal seals it again. Now...if only we can get someone to start writing songs that touch the soul and move the spirit like they used to. Meantime Seal, bring on volume three, there are lots of great soul songs out there waiting to get a slightly contemporary makeover or re-interpretation. Until then, get Soul 2, and Soul. Soul...Sealed and impeccably delivered.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Brilliant 13 Aug 2012
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Soul was good and sounds better after listening to this album; probably my favourite album of 2011. Seal has an incredible feel and love for the music and it comes through on every track. I've been playing it in my car for months. Haven't found anybody who doesn't love it immediately and then it grows on you some more. Well done Seal; No 3 please !

3.0 out of 5 stars A disappointed fan 1 Feb 2012
Format:Audio CD
Seal has had a very accomplished career in music spanning two decades with hardly any flaws. Marking his 20 years in the music business, Seals' eighth album "Soul 2" as its title suggests is his second collection of Soul classics. Where the first collection of songs he released in 2008 called "Soul" had some very powerful and emotional moments, I am sad to say that I cannot say the same for this release. The interpretations tend to be quite bland and the choice of songs is possibly not that inspiring or exciting making "Soul 2" sound more like a ploy for the record company to make some money rather than enable the artist to create an authentic and credible record. Do not get me wrong - the songs are well known, successful and nicely sung. I just have such high expectations from Seal that I would want hear more originality and depth from him.

On one hand, there are great song choices which lack that special something. "Wishing On A Star" is pleasant but has seen better days in its original version sung by Rose Royce. Al Green's "Let's Stay Together" and Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On" are classic Soul songs but suffer the same fate as they are interpreted in a way that makes them sound less appealing and interesting. On the other hand, there are some poor song choices. The Miracles' "Ohh Baby Baby", The O'Jays' "Back Stabbers" and The Chi-Lites "Oh Girl" are sadly given their original arrangements and fade into the background. I have to admit that I had never heard of "Love Won't Let Me Wait" by Major Harris, but it does not really draw me in nor push me away which is the main problem with this album.

3.0 out of 5 stars Classic tunes done well 16 Jan 2012
Format:Audio CD
You could be mean about this - man produces (BBC) Radio Two album of cover versions - but what's the point? He's got a fantastic voice and these are classic tunes originally hits at the hands of Marvin Gaye, Bill Withers, Al Green, Teddy Pendergrass et al.
A couple are a little lacklustre but the ones that work, really work, such as "Wishing on a star", "Let's stay together", "Love doesn't live here anymore" and "Lean on me".
In fact, sometimes he's better than the originals because you can make out the lyrics better; some are clever and touching, others cheesy.
"Soul 2" follows his previous album "Soul" and sees him join forces once again with legendary producer Trevor Horn. "Soul" sold shedloads across the world.
From memory I seem to think Seal put out an album himself (maybe it was "Soul") but now he's back on a major label, so presumably his sales made a point for him, in which case well done.

I loved this CD, it has improved on his first Soul CD. I didn't think any one could cover the soul greats like Marvin Gay or Teddy Prendergrass, but Seal does it perfectly. Read more
