Book Description

5 Feb 2007 BBC Audiobooks
This title presents, for the first time on CD, fifteen episodes of the classic radio comedy sketch series featuring John Cleese, Tim Brooke-Taylor, Graeme Garden, David Hatch, Jo Kendall and Bill Oddie. Originally released on cassette, the episodes are now presented in chronological order. They include the special 25th anniversary double episode from 1989. The irreverent radio comedy series, which ran between 1964 and 1973, is a mix of quickfire sketches, bad puns, humorous songs and TV and cinema parodies. It quickly developed a cult following and was the forerunner of "The Goodies and I'm Sorry I Haven't a Clue". The fifth volume of episodes is also being released separately.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hilarious and great fun from comic greats 21 Feb 2007
Format:Audio CD
I don't know why it is that I'm Sorry I Haven't A Clue has a much bigger reputation than it's predecessor I'm Sorry I'll Read That Again. It was the one of the bridges for it's performers between the Cambridge footlights and Monty Python, The Goodies etc.

Graeme Garden and Bill Oddie's scripts were fantastic, particularly the Prune Plays. On the box it promises "Bad puns." Well, they are groaners, but they're definitely clever and witty. If you imagine the funniest word games on I'm Sorry...Clue, like "Will you welcome please Mr & Mrs..," well they originated from this show.

The box set features strong episodes on disks 1 and 3, and a more celebratory tone on disk 2 (with the first rather timid episode and the 25th anniversary reunion). Disk 4 is more conventional ISIRTA, but that's maybe becuase I grew up listening to the episodes on disk 1 and 3. A fifth volume is available and I cannot wait to hear that!

If you want to listen to clasic BBC radio comedy and you want to have FUN and a good, politically incorrect laugh, then this is the box set for you. I'm glad the BBC released this on CD, next stop Radio Active please!

On the positive side, I was glad to see ISIRTA finally out on audio CD. My cassettes were long gone. And even though the price of this set seemed rather steep, I thought it would be worth it, just to have ISIRTA in a better version.

I was wrong.

There were so many incredible episodes of this show that they could have chosen to put on these four CDs, but of the 14 they did put on (plus the "Anniversary Special"), I would say that only about 4 or 5 of them are truly funny and memorable and worth listening to more than once. Most of the episodes come from the last two years of the show, when the creative energy was obviously not what it had been in the first 5 years of the show.

The episodes break down as follows: Series 1 -- one episode; Series 2 -- none; Series 3 -- one episode; Series 4 -- none; Series 5 -- none; Series 6 -- two episodes; Series 7 -- none; Series 8 -- SIX episodes; and Series 9 -- four episodes.

Very disappointing product, I must say. Hardly worth nearly £50 (PLUS VAT PLUS shipping!) I was planning to order Volume 5, but after this one, I will be passing on that.

Too bad. This had a lot of potential, but didn't come anywhere close to fulfilling that promise.
