I've been a fan of Wagon Christ aka Luke Vibert aka Plug etc etc. since I heard his genius "Drum and Bass for Papa" LP. This LP stands up to that one, and his other true classic "Big Soup". All the Vibert trademarks are there...genuinely funny samples, expertly sequenced loops and (as a result) hooks to die for.
Unlike his contemporaries like u-ziq and Aphex Twin, Luke hasn't got bogged down in trying to make really complicated 2,000bpm polyrhythmic beats that you can't dance to..he just lets the beats roll and concentrates on building fantastic melodies, and making coherent tracks that are just a joy to listen to.
In dance music terms he's a veteran now, and really deserves more recognition outside the whole "Dance" cul-de-sac. This is the kind of music you don't need to be a rabid clubber, nor a dieheard Vinyl junkie to enjoy...its just darn good electronic music written by one of the great unsung heroes of his generation.

Wagon Christ is an interesting musician, recording under many monikers for many labels. For Ninja Tune he writes what could be classed as cheesy music but beyond your initial reaction are a whole host of hugely inventive ideas.
Sometimes the album will depart into Aphex influenced lunar acid as on 'Sci Fi Stair Case' or 'Sorry I Make You Lush' .'Im Singing' has Luke singing on it I think for the first time, 'Shadows' has a beautiful female vocal on top of lush strings. Other elements in this album include funk and hip hop. A very eclectic album by anyones standards. But ultimately Luke Vibert has created a sound all his own... kitschtronica!!
For me this is his best album since Throbbing Pouch the man is an absurd genius....

I'm left with the feeling that I've heard it all before, 80's synths, chopped up layered samples, it reminds me of early Paul Hardcastle in places. The collages of sounds he creates do amble along in a kind of uniform but nonetheless interesting way, but on the whole its hardly unique or inspiring. The album highlights would have to be Shadows and tracks 9 and 10. Ninja Tune fans will rave about this....but in an attempt to be more objective I'd say its nice background music, but its not great and certainly nothing to get exicted about. The BBC will probably use it for Gardening programmes....

I was very excited about this album, but it has been very disappointing.. I know that you can't expect artists to produce the same style on every album - they need to explore and progress, however, while this album is technically brilliant, it lacks those powerful tracks, such as Fly Swat, Memory Towel, Step to the Music, Musipal, Bend over and All of it is now. Of course that is my taste but without these types of tracks the album sounds very bland and repetitive, it just lacks that wacky creative edge.. Have tried listening quite a few times and the songs just don't catch...
