Product Description

Product Description

This pocket-sized full-colour guide is designed for holidaymakers who want to get off the beaten track. Visit Pompei, Vesuvius and the other famous sites in the area or, better still, walk to hillside villages or remote monasteries and be regaled by the most stunning of views all along the way. Sorrento, Amalfi and Capri are wonderful areas for walkers, with inland areas linked to the coastal resorts of the Neapolitan Riviera by ancient footpaths and mule trails. These take you almost from your hotel doorstep up into the lemon groves - or you can just take a bus up into the hills and walk back down to your hotel! The flowers are a constant delight - from broom and rosemary in March to freesias and cistus in May. In autumn, the woods are carpeted with cyclamen. Most of the paths described can be followed easily by people who do not claim to be regular walkers, though committed hikers will like them too. The book has a free on-line update service.

From the Author

If you want to get away from the tourist trail and get a little taste of the "real" Italy ... read on. A wonderful network of medieval footpaths criss-crosses the Sorrento peninsula and Capri. With such dramatic terrain, there's always a marvellous view round the next corner. You get into chance meetings with locals tending their lemon terraces or carrying timber by mule, or discover remote chapels, find a fig tree groaning with fruit on the path side, sample a beer or a pasta in a small village piazza, be regaled by orchids, rosemary, cyclamen and countless other wild flowers, and finally work up an appetite to justify a mighty evening meal. All comes at the cost of this small guide book and a little effort..............

This sixth edition (pub. October 2010) is the product of eighteen years visiting the region. By walking the paths and sifting the news from readers who have written in, I have developed a route network that gives maximum flexibility for you to choose a walk of just the right length and difficulty. You are helped in planning the walks by the fact that the network is divided into connecting segments, with walk planner diagrams to help choose the segments to make up your walk. Many walks are good for strollers. Quite a few of the segments go high into the hills along mountain tracks.................

New walks for this edition are: an approach to the Santuario Avvocata from the east; a better route from Pogerola to San Lazzaro, with the option of a detour to an incredibly remote ruined convent; a link that integrates Marina di Furore fully into the coastal path; a spectacular but easy path above Positano; on Capri, a visit to the intriguing Villa Fersen; and a splendid coastal walk on the island's west coast taking in three small C17 forts.................

Mostly a car tends to hinder rather than help. Parking is a nightmare and often your walk ends up in a different place from the start. Best to use bus or boat, using timetables in this guide book (plus lots of web links). Quite often you can organise your walks to start right from your hotel doorstep. Despite this homily, some short car tours to out-of-the-way places have been included................

Use the book to organise your own unforgettable walking holiday. Choose a package tour to one of the main resorts, or use the web links and timetables, and advice on public transport to put your own holiday together. And get the update for this book from the Sunflowerbooks web site -- it gives a number of nuggets of extra information plus any changes that have occurred since publication......................

I hope I have whetted your appetite for this splendid region and its lovely walking. Maybe someone who has sampled the walking here will be able to write an Amazon review to help future readers, as reader reviews of earlier editions are not carried across. And whatever your plans, enjoy your walking.

I have bought this book in various editions. It is very good and covers the area well.Bus routes and times are even included, though such information may
be less relevant when they are full in the summer season. I feel the main
ommission is the lack of GPS data as the maps of the area are descibed as
being unreliable and at least some co-ordinates would be helpful.

Sorrento walks review 18 April 2011
By Janey C
This wasn't exactly what I was expecting, as all the other walking books I own consist of a series of little maps with walks marked out on them and a commentary to go with them.
This book is slightly different as it mainly just describes and maps interlinking paths enabling you to create your own walks (although some 'walks' are also suggested). Once I got used to this I quite liked it as it gives you more flexibilty.
The commentary supplied for each route is very good, making it quite easy to choose where to go. All the info you could need is also there, regarding refreshment stops, picnic spots, places of interest, difficulty and duration of walk etc.
As we had a car, I was also impressed with the suggested driving tours, which you could combine with some of the walking routes if you wish.
