Having read a lot of reviews about the different snow boots available, and particulary Sorel ones, I ummed and ahhed about buying them, but I'm glad I did. They look great, obviously, but I had a few concerns over the comfort and the sizing after reading the mixed reviews - well, I'm going to put myself in the "love them" camp.

I'm going to be living in the Alps this winter, so wanted a sturdy, comfortable, practical boot I can use everyday, preferably with a bit of style attached, and these seem to fit the bill. A word of warning though - don't think of these as "fashion boots", as they are very definitely utility boots first and fashion second, which I think is where a lot of people have got confused and subsequently rated them badly because they didn't meet their expectations.

Firstly - they are totally waterproof and insulated - this makes them heavier than your average fashion winter leather boot. The bottom part is solid rubber - like a thick welly - with a thick grippy sole and an insulated felt liner. This means that they will feel stiff and inflexible, if you're not used to that kind of boot - much more like a proper walking boot or agricultural wellies / yard boots. This also means that you probably want them to fit a bit looser than a normal boot. As other reviews have mentioned, they are in fact sized pretty generously, but you'll need that space for comfort like wiggling your toes (and possibly thick socks), so I would suggest NOT being tempted to go a half size smaller. In fact, maybe go bigger. I wear between a UK7 and 8, depending on make of the shoe, and I've ordered an UK8.5 - whilst this gives me quite a lot of space when in normal thin socks, I'm not sliding around in them due to the fit of the leg, which I'll come on to in a second.

I am a size UK 5.5 with a normal instep, and standard foot width. I ordered true to size based on other reviews, yet the struggle to get the boots on and off (due to a ridiculously low instep with no 'give' due to it being rubber) actually left me red-faced and out of breath. It is a two-person job!

I was concerned that I would end up damaging the heel of the boots in my efforts to remove them. I actually noticed from reviews elsewhere that others have found that the heel collapses in this boot after some wear, resulting in an agonising lump at the heel, and I can certainly see how that can happen - the heel on my newly ordered boots bent inwards at the third attempt of trying them on.

This is also the first pair of part-rubber boots I have owned, from which the rubber actually came off upon being rubbed - imagine if you will, the surface of a pencil eraser. I'm not a scientist but my understanding of one of the desired outcomes of the process of vulcanisation, is durability. The rubber on these boots didn't seem durable at all.

Once I eventually got them on, they were an okay-ish fit, width-wise but the tips of my toes were just touching the felt lining, which while not painful, was slightly uncomfortable. I felt that the next available size up, 6.5, was likely to be too large, so I decided to give up on these boots and ordered another style from the sorel range.

Love the style and comfort, very disappointed these don't have an anti slip sole for ice. I thought that would be standard with a pair of snow boots, as it is standard with other cheaper brands of snow boot. Please please change this feature!
