Video Description

This uproariously funny white trash campfest takes a wicked peek into an extended family of Texas rednecks who've come together for the funeral of their adulterous matriarch. Attending the funeral are her dueling big-haired daughters LaVonda (Ann Walker) and Latrelle (Bonnie Bedelia); sister Sissy (Beth Grant), who picked the wrong time to quit smoking; a revengeful neighbor (Delta Burke); brother Earl (Leslie Jordan), a Tammy Wynette-obsessed drag queen; hunky Ty (Kirk Geiger), Latrelle's estranged gay son; and Bitsy Mae (Olivia Newton-John), a country music-singing ex-con lesbian. The tantrums, gossips and revelations spill all over the linoleum floor in this film that deliriously revels at its chitin-loving, beer-guzzling, gun-totting, same sex-loving, pill-popping eccentrics.

Synopsis

Tripping over her lover's wooden legs, Grandma Peggy has met her maker and now her Texan family is showing up for the funeral. With a raucous cast of characters ranging from feuding big-haired sisters to the cross-dressing Brother Boy, SORDID LIVES skewers Texan white trash culture. The film marks the directorial debut of Del Shores, the writer-producer of the television programme TOUCHED BY AN ANGEL.

5.0 out of 5 stars Trailer Trash at its best!, 7 Aug 2009

I found out about the television series this is taken from by accident when I downloaded a clip. The irreverent and bad taste humour is wonderfully American and it is so wonderful to buy a DVD you have never heard of based on a short clip and then find it hailariously funny. I loved every minute.

5.0 out of 5 stars Low Budget Hilarity , 16 Mar 2009

I had heard about this film through a friend in the USA, who said that in places it has a continued marathon run every year. I thought `Oh, this must be interesting then if people still flock to see it!'
Well I was right!
This is a piece of pure low budget corny goodness that can be enjoyed without any struggle. Set around the lives of a Texas family this film explores death, addiction, forgiveness and coming out in a comical yet sometimes moving way.
All the actors have a good crack at making this movie special, especially Leslie Jordan as the institutionalised Tammy Wynette fan who goes around dressing and performing like his idol. And the lovely Olivia Newton-John strutting her stuff as an ex-con lesbian and belting out a few tunes. She's never lost it!
Yes it's cheesy, corny and all the other derogatory words I can think off. But it is a lovely film, and it's easy to see why it has become such a cult movie in America. Hey The Rocky Horror Picture Show wasn't a perfect film, but look at the fame that has garnered.

1.0 out of 5 stars About as funny as getting Chlamydia., 20 Dec 2008
By J. Sinclair (North Yorkshire UK) - See all my reviews

Having bought enumerate 'gay' themed DVD's I thought I'd give this one a try... well it had so many well known actors/singers in it! This alleged comedy is certainly no Adam and Steve (by far the best) nor is it funny, well written, well produced and edited or even well acted. A parade of pointless characters try to drag out this tired, old and very much over-long story with some of the most shockingly bad acting I've seen in years. Even the very funny Leslie Jordan struggles with the appaling script and his jaw droppingly bad co-star playing the psychiatrist/psychologist/who cares?
Go and see any school play or am-dram production where you will see much superior acting and probably a higher budget too but don't spend your money on this irrelevant waste of time.

1.0 out of 5 stars A trashy movie about white trash
I haven't seen any of Del Shores' other oeuvres, and I'm not going to.
This movie (based on the directors own play) misses the mark in so many ways that I don't even know... Read more
