Sorceries (also available in a US edition as The Shimmering Door) contains not a single dull story. In fact, in variety of tales and storytelling styles, it is unmatched among all the anthologies I've read (and I am a pretty voracious reader).
To name any one tale as a favourite would be to greatly offend those who, in following this recommendation, will find some one story which will stay with them for ever, but I will just say that I would pay the full price for a first acquaintance with any one of the following four stories; "Family Ties" by L. Schimel, "Wicked Cool" by C. Hirsch, "The Peachwood Flute" by B. and J. West, and "A Wreath of Pale Flowers for Vitri" by T. Edgerton. Even as I type this other names clamour for my attention.
No fan of Tolkien or the high fantasy of Le Guin will fail to appreciate this book. May I taste the fruit of the Basilisk Tree if I lie!
