Review

""With Fokker D VII Aces of World War I (Part 2): ""This is the first time I have read examples of these books... If these books are representative, it must be a truly formidable series... Although both books complement each other, they both can stand alone as useful works describing this outstanding aircraft of World War I." -Mike Wollan, "Aerodrome"
With Fokker D VII Aces of World War I (Part 2): ""I'll just start right off and say that both of these books should be on your World War I reading list... [Both] of these books have extensive color plates and descriptions of each of the markings. Also, there are many photos of the pilots and their airplanes, including some interesting cockpit shots of the crude instruments they used." -Rob Auer, "Aerodrome"
..".contains an extraordinary amount of first-person material including logbook entries for three aces... Additionally, Franks includes pilot reports by WWI and latter-day pilots, including Cecil Lewis' lively discussionf

Product Description

Built as a replacement for the Pup, the Triplane boasted a superior rate of climb and greatly improved manoeuvrability thanks to its extra wing. Indeed, when the type made its combat debut with the RNAS in February 1917, the Triplane could easily out-climb any other aircraft operated by either side. This book focuses on the aircraft whose design had a great impact on the enemy - so much so that the German High Command immediately ordered their manufacturers to produce triplane designs to counter the Sopwith fighter, the most famous of which was the Fokker Dr I. This book examines the Sopwith Triplane's history from the perspective of the aces that flew it.

First Sentence
The only three-winged fighter aircraft to see active duty with Britain's flying services in World War 1, Sopwith's Triplane was the sole viable multi-winged aircraft design capable of challenging the biplane's supremacy during the early days of flight. Read the first page

I have always been interested in WW1 planes, but not many books are available in Australia.
this item gives great details of the subject, along with many good photos and colour plates of the markings, and details of pilots and squadrons.

SOPWITH TRIPLANE 19 May 2008
By P. A. Panozzo - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
Norman Franks is regarded by many as one of the premier aero historians. He has expertly assembled the history of the Sopwith Triplane and it's most successful airmen, the aces, in this volume of the Osprey series. This series of books, while concise (generally less than 100 pages), effectively illuminate their topic through scholarly researched text, photos, artwork and drawings. This volume, along with many other aircraft of World War One, deserve to be a part of everyone's aviation collection. I particularly enjoy the Osprey aviation series. They are well executed, concise, handy reference resources and generally, the artwork presented in them is awe-inspiring! The Sopwith Camel is another title by Norman Franks that you may find interesting. Sopwith Camel Aces of World War 1 (Aircraft of the Aces) If you are interested in the German Fokker Triplane, also by Norman Franks, check out this link.Fokker Dr I Aces of World War I (Osprey Aircraft of the Aces No 40). Another book that may interest you is AUSTRALIAN HAWK OVER THE WESTERN FRONT: A Biography of Major R S Dallas DSO, DSC, C de G avec Palme a famous Sopwith Triplane ace. Also from Osprey Publishing Naval Aces of World War 1 part 2 (Aircraft of the Aces) soon to be released. Part one is already available but I wasn't able to add a link for it, maybe it can be accessed from Part 2 link? Part 1 features the Naval Sopwith Triplane aces and Part 2 focuses on their opponents and other flying boat aces.
