Synopsis

The personal and professional exploits of Tony Soprano (James Gandolfini) continue in the sixth series of award-winning drama THE SOPRANOS. This time round, Tony faces heightened tension between the New York and New Jersey families over Johnny Sack's (Vince Curatola) imprisonment. Christopher (Michael Imperioli), Paulie (Tony Sirico), and Silvio (Steve Van Zandt) still keep their eyes on the business end of Tony's life, while Anthony Jr (Robert Iler) and Meadow (Jamie Lynn Sigler) learn some tough lessons as the offspring of a notorious mob boss. As always, Dr. Melfi (Lorraine Bracco) is on hand to fend off Tony's advances and steady his nerves through her therapy sessions. A selection of episodes from the show's sixth series are collected here.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not the Complete Series 6, 9 April 2007
By Chris White (United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
A word of caution: this DVD set has been inaccurately titled in the UK. Series 6 of "The Sopranos" is being broadcast in two parts and comprises 21 episodes in total. This set only contains the first 12 instalments and should therefore be titled "Series 6, Part 1" (as it is in the US). A complete boxset should follow when the series has finished transmission.

ADDENDUM: Amazon changed its product description since I wrote this review, but the packaging still says "Series Six".

3.0 out of 5 stars 1/2 the value, 1/2 the plot, 17 Jun 2007
As said before this is only the first half of the season and should have been entitled 'Season 6: Volume 1' or something like that. Im speculating but the impression you get from the packaging of the box is that they never intended to finish series 6 until they saw the dvd sales figures.

There are still pluses to buying this - you're still getting 12 episodes of the final series of the best drama ever produced. The plot twists in this series reach 'desperate housewives' proportions but the characters reactions to every scenario look and stay real and all of the scenarios are still feasible mafia issues.

Bottom Line: There are other box sets you can get for the same price and get a full series ('24' etc.) so wait for a price cut or the full 24 episode box set. Both halves of this season are phenominal and with completely different atmospheres and tensions to the point where they almost feel seperate but not priced seperately :P

5.0 out of 5 stars A welcome comedown, 1 Dec 2006
By R. Furze (Dublin, Ireland) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I cannot believe the reviewers here complaining about series six.

The first complaint, that HBO are ripping off viewers by asking them to pay for only half a series, is simply ludicrous. Previous series were thirteen episodes. There are twelve here. The price at release is roughly the same. How can that possibly be conceived as ripping off the Sopranos-loving public?

The second complaint is even more remarkable. Encapsulated by the Livia-esque phrase, "It's too slow," it shows a lack of faith in (and I think an understanding of) what The Sopranos is about.

The Sopranos is about character, nothing revelatory there, but its approach to character is very much in the tradition of John Cassavetes' independent cinema. The choices The Sopranos creator David Chase has made throughout its run is testament to this.

From its peripheral stars (Peter Bogdanovich, a collaborator on Cassavetes' Opening Night) to its directors (Steve Buscemi, an admirer of Cassavetes) and even its locations (Adriana's club is called The Crazy Horse, after the club owned by Cosmo Vitelli in Cassavetes' The Killng Of A Chinese Bookie)the show is as close in its conception to Gloria and Husbands as it is to Goodfellas. (And don't forget, Cassavetes was a mentor to Scorsese too.) This means what seems 'slow' or 'badly-made' to some people is in fact a much more measured look at mob life. But isn't that why we all fell in love with the Sopranos in the first place?

In short, then, if you want to watch quality television drama, watch The Sopranos. If, on the other hand, you want bright lights, bells and whistles, you're in the wrong part of Amazon, my friend. In which case, try clicking on the TOYS & GAMES tab at the top of this screen and buy the Winnie the Pooh Light Up Cot Mobile instead.
