The Anholts' books are my absolute favourites when it comes to illustrations. (Parentdish 20121201) --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

About the Author

Laurence Anholt has written over seventy books, many in collaboration with his wife Catherine. They are both highly regarded in the UK and abroad as a successful author/illustrator team, and have had their books translated into many different languages. \n \nThey met as undergraduates at Falmouth School of Art, and went on to achieve Master`s Degrees from the Royal Academy of Art and the Royal College respectively. \n \nThe books which they have collaborated on are based firmly within their own family`s experiences, and many of Catherine`s illustrations depict scenes which families will recognise. It is this element which has helped to make their books so successful. \n \nLaurence also writes and illustrates his own books, and has written books with other illustrators, notably the Seriously Silly Stories, a topsy turvy series based on traditional tales but with a wonderful new twist. These were hilariously illustrated by Arthur Robins. In this series, Snow White and the Seven Aliens was awarded The Smarties Book Prize, and was shortlisted for the Federation of Children`s Book Groups Children`s Book Award and the Experian Big Three Book Prize. Daft Jack and the Beanstack was on the Sheffield Book Award shortlist and Ghostyshocks and the Three Scares was Pick of the Year for the Children`s Book Award. \n \nLaurence writes for a wide range of ages and is one of the most popular authors of today. \n \nCatherine and Laurence Anholt live in Lyme Regis with their three children. Catherine has illustrated many books in collaboration with her husband Lawrence. A wonderful story which acknowledges the emotional ups and downs experienced by a small girl whose existence is about to be turned upside down by the arrival of a new baby. The story is brought to life through the imaginative use of the Seasons to illustrate the passage of time. A concept easily grasped by our three year old daughter (called Sophie) whose brother was born nine months ago. Our whole family recognised the little girl in the story and it provided an ideal opportunity for us to discuss the issues raised.

4.0 out of 5 stars A beautiful book 14 Mar 2002
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
This is a beautiful story, which reduced me to tears! It is presented with excellent illustrations, and the tale makes the concept of a new baby easy to grasp.
My 3 year old loves it, and I still read it to her now that her brother is 6 months old. He has been referred to as 'our Autumn baby' from pregnancy onwards, because of the Winter baby in this book.
A perfect gift for a little girl expecting a brother.
My only slight reservation is the handling of the concept of jealousy, as 'Sophie' is forced to play alone in the garden when mummy and daddy are too busy with the baby.

Sophie learns her mother is expecting a baby. The new baby arrives, gets all the attention and Sophie is ignored. She is left alone in the snow, crying because her parents are preoccupied with the new arrival. Her Daddy comes out and scoops her up, but simply tells her that the world has changed and Sophie can just lump it.

Harsh stuff, huh?

Indeed it is. I'm ambivalent about this book because all that happens is that Sophie has to put up with a sibling and learns to live with being less important than she was. How this is supposed to reassure children expecting a sibling I can't imagine!
