With over 50 million books sold in the Left Behind Series, and critical acclaim for far-reaching publications and organisations, you could be forgiven for thinking that Jerry Jenkins could rest on his laurels and stick to the tried and tested formula. It is, therefore, refreshing that in this day and age of the "quick buck" that a writer is not afraid to try something new, as he does with Soon.
Of course, as an author of over 100 books, many of which have been best sellers, and a renouned Christian author and speaker, Jenkins sticks with a common theme - redemption from sin and a return to God - as has been told before, but sets his tale this time in a fictional near future where religion has been outlawed following a devastating Third World War, and centres on a formerly military man Paul Stepola as he tries to root out the growing underground religious threat.
As with all of Jenkins novels, the story is told with the same attention to detail, the same fluent, confident styling that has been his trademark. Whilst an obvious man of faith and very forthright in bringing that to the fore, he manages to still convey an engaging and entertaining storyline for even the most non-religious reader.
With only a slight criticism of a mildly stifled ending (a follow up may be in order, perhaps?), Soon presents itself as a worthy addition to the growing Jenkins collection, and a fascinating read for both Christians and non-Christians alike.
