In Detail

Let’s go retro

Effective digital technology in a retro style design. Big round buttons, a large easy-to-use volume knob and a curved profile set the tone of this vintage look radio. It’s compact and colourful in black, white or red to match the décor in your home. A throwback to the past with DAB+ for the future.

Explore thousands of digital radio stations

Once upon a time, you could spend an age twiddling dials in the hope of finding a strong signal to listen to. Now it’s all changed with DAB (Digital Audio Broadcasting). With DAB/DAB+ (Band III) digital radio, you have a huge choice of stations at your fingertips, broadcasting in clear sound quality. Tune in at the touch of a button using 5 DAB/DAB+ presets. You can also access a full spectrum of popular FM stations with 5 presets for storing your favourites.

See what you’re listening to

One of the big benefits of DAB/DAB+ is its ability to transmit real-time information such as song titles, music type and station data. So when you tune in and scroll on the LCD display, you’ll be able to see exactly what you’re listening to. With so many stations available, this is a really handy feature that puts you in total command of your radio.

A clearer sound with no interference

Crackle and hiss spoils a good radio broadcast. But with DAB, you don’t suffer from the interference that sometimes accompanies weaker FM signals. DAB transmits digital audio, giving you superior reception quality and a clearer, purer broadcast. All helped along by Sony audio technology.

Your radio comes with you

Light and compact, this digital radio is ready to follow you wherever you go. It runs equally well on three C batteries as it does from the mains, making it perfect for taking on holiday or to the park. You’ll get up to 16 hours of DAB/DAB+ reception or up to 14 hours of FM reception when using Sony C-sized alkaline batteries. There’s also a low battery alert on the LCD display.

I took some assumed risk on this purchase, relying on the manufacturer's reputation rather than the inadequate item description and pictures on this site at the time of writing. However after only a few hours since taking delivery I'm very pleased with this purchase. It is intended for a home office environment, and portability is also a requirement.

The radio is very handsome in black in my subjective opinion, exactly the functional smart bench-mark appliance one has come to expect from Sony. It looks and feels well made and I have no reason to think that this item will not give many years of faithful service. The sound is adequately good for a portable radio and not in the hi-fi bracket. I did not want or need the boomy base heavy output that currently seems to equate with consumer desired sound quality.

The device searches for available stations as soon as it is plugged in and switched on. Operation and operating instructions are clear and simple.

The controls are uncomplicated and fall easily to hand, the buttons with a satisfying little click to operate and the volume dial is analogue rather than stepped as found on some current DABs. This allows exactly the right chosen low volume rather than forcing compromise between set sound level steps. There is on the side an input socket for an an external source such as an mp3 player or smart-phone. The output is mono. The LCD display is nice and clear and backlit on mains power as required. Dimensions approx 240mm x 130 x 90ish.

Contrary to what may seem implied in the aforementioned rather scant and repetitive description, there does not seem to be a facility for mains charging. There is a sleep function which turns the radio off after a time period but no alarm clock for those who may be inclined to power-nap at their desk. If i have any issues i will come back and advise. Recommended.

I purchased this so I could listen to the radio in my greenhouse, where there is no power supply. I chose it not only for its battery power option, but because it was reputed to have good sensitivity to weak stations. I have not been disappointed. I live in an area with very poor reception because of the surrounding hills, and the fact that the broadcasters don't seem to know that Shropshire exists - so there are no transmitters nearby! This radio, however, pulls in everything I want to listen to better than any other radio I possess, including my hi-fi tuner with a roof top aerial!

Beautifully designed, classy looking radio with a clear sound and all the comfort of Sony's reputation for long term quality. I doubt that there is any rival product better than this mid-sized Sony.

My previous experience of DAB radio has been very poor .i.e very heavy power consumption, appalling quality on weaker signals and not very good ergonomically. In fact both of them (Roberts) ended up on the rubbish heap! So I am very happy to say that the Sony XDRS60 is an excellent radio in every respect. The red/silver combination is very pleasing and the plastic/ metal materials of high quality. Ergonomically it is excellent with the on/off and preset station buttons on the top cabinet surface allowing one handed operation. As others have said - it is very sensitive on both DAB and FM. The latter is very important to me as local stations in Norfolk are not available on DAB and they have no plans. Set -up is automatic on both bands on first switching on, and storing stations on the presets very straightforward. The large tuning and volume knobs are very smooth to operate and the illuminated display very clear with all the station info you need, along with a digital clock and battery status indicator - if batteries are installed. Incidentally I highly reccomend you do this. Not only do you get very convenient portable operation (but note it has no carrying handle), but also the 3x C cells weigh the set down sufficiently for one handed operation of the front panel controls. I reccomend purchasing a box of 10 Duracell industrial pro cells from Amazon. They have a huge ampere/ hour capacity and cost less than £8 for 10batts. I have been running on 3 of these for 2 months and the bat status indicator still reads full! Audio quality is very good indeed and this holds at high volume settings. Although it is somewhat middle/top weighted, the bass you do get is very clean and tight. In summary I highly reccomend this radio. At £69 it beats the overpriced offerings from Pure and Roberts in the £90-120 region, all over the place. Treat yourself for Christmas, you won't regret it!

I have bought two of these items - one from Sony direct and one from Amazon. The delivery from Amazon was excellent.
One of the radios I gave to an old lady of 87 after I had programmed four of the five selector buttons to give her Radio 2, Radio 3, Classic FM and Radio 4. She now listens to the radio as well as her Sony televison and it has given her a new lease of life. The quality of the sound has to be heard to be appreciated and indeed is typical of a Sony product i.e. first class. The second item I have sent as a present to my son in Australia and he will be thrilled when it arrives. DAB radio is the way to go and the receptio with this Sony model is excellent picking up many stations without any trouble. Congratulations to Sony for a first class product and to Amazon for an excellent delivery and price
