4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent bit of kit - but only if bought at the right price, 24 Jun 2007

This review is from: Sony XA110IP.U iPod HDD Adaptor (Electronics)
Having read mostly poor reviews for this ipod adaptor I was reluctant to purchase - especially as my local dealership was selling it at £60!

However, I spend 3 hours in my car each day, so the chance to hook up my iPod to my car stereo was a big draw. Especially as my previous attempts at this - via an FM transmitter - had proved frustrating and fruitless.

With my mind made up to purchase, it was now all about the right price - and Amazon won out. Having originally prices up a Sony X410 stereo from Argos and the XA110IP adaptor for a total of £170 I figured I could do better. I managed to buy both (BOTH) of these for a total of £101 from Amazon - or rather Budget Car Audio, via Amazon.

Two days after placing the order, everything arrived perfectly packaged. The install took all of 1 hour (including making a hole in the back of the glovebox for the cable) and the finished results are awesome. Sound quality is 10/10, but bear the following in mind: DO NOT think that you'll be able to effortlessly flick between albums, artists etc from the head unit. I've got over 5,000 tracks on my iPod, so picking out a particular track is nigh on impossible BUT as long as you make lots of playlists you'll be up and running. I use the following folders: weekly podcasts, catchup podcasts, and then i make up smart playlists for albums that i feel like listening to. If you're a heavy iPod user you'll be used to syncing your iPod every night - so no big deal.

Should you really want to hunt out that special track, simply make use of the free cable supplied by Budget Car Audioto plug into the front of the head unit and use the iPod as normal.

1.0 out of 5 stars Does Not Charge My Nano!, 5 Feb 2009

This review is from: Sony XA110IP.U iPod HDD Adaptor (Electronics)
Bought this item so that I didn't have to use my Griffin iTrip so that quality would be improved - I also wanted to do away with the charger I have plugged into my lighter socket. This device connects to my Ipod and plays music through the headunit but it says when you plug it in that it will not charge the device. No use to me whatsoever. Navigation through the songs seems cumbersome and the screen on the Ipod has an Xplod logo instead of album covers. I will be using the AUX in on the front of the head unit and hiding the charger somewhere behind the dash. I'm sure this will charge other Ipods but it doesn't work with my 4th Generation Ipod Nano. Disappointed really as I thought Ipod integration would be great. Hope this review helps.

2.0 out of 5 stars A very poor effort, 5 Sep 2009

I am using this with my MEX-BT5000 head unit. Right from the off the design is poorly thought through - the cable from the box to the iPod is non removable and has quite a wide plug on it to go to the iPod, making it hard to thread through holes to route through the car. In the end I took the box to bits and unplugged it from inside the box itself to give me a lot more flexibility with routing the cable into the centre console box.

Once plugged in the disappointments continue - sound quality is reasonable, however the navigation of the iPod is very, very slow. On top of this every time you turn the car or stereo off the place you are at is lost and you have to start from scratch next time you start the car. Navigation is far, far too slow to consider seeking through by album or artist so the only way to make this useful is to make playlists before you travel. You cannot even use the controls on the front of the iPod to find stuff, as non of them work when it's plugged in.

Overall an obvious bodge job by Sony. I have given up on it and just use a mini jack to aux input lead and navigate on the iPod itself, which I think tells you everything you need to know about the XA-110IP.
