Fun:
Ever since the original Playstation came into being there has always been Wipeout. I own every single one from the first groundbreaking release to Wipeout HD on the PS3 as well as Pure and Pulse on the PSP. What has always been a little strange though is the lack of Wipeout for the PS2. Granted there is Wipeout Fusion but that was a huge disappointment in my eyes. They totally changed the essence of what Wipeout was. Gone was the drab yet stylish interfaces and landscapes and in it's place was cartoonish graphics and gameplay that never quite felt right. Nice hover racing game, yes. Wipeout? Not in my eyes.

So the PS2 was left with no true Wipeout for years but finally, towards the end of the PS2's scheduled lifespan, Sony have ported over Wipeout Pulse from the PSP and it is an absolute joy. If you've played it on the PSP then you will know what to expect as it is a perfect conversion. The graphics are as good as they can get on a PS2 with the only noticeable slowdown being when the action gets a bit too frenzied (as in the eliminator modes). There are no pop ups, the graphics are smooth and it's visually stunning.
One of the reasons I love Pulse on the PSP is the Eliminator. It's also in Wipeout HD but they decided to go for a points based system rather than out and out kills which, for me, made it less fun as a session can be won merely by crossing the line. Thankfully it's the kills based system for the PS2 release so you can ramp up the required kills to win to 25 and blast away to your hearts content. When I was playing it there were plenty of "just one more go" urges.

It's great to see Sony have done this port justice and left the Wipeout legacy on the PS2 on a high rather than done a lazy conversion from the PSP. If you don't have the money to stretch for a PS3 and HDTV then this will satisfy your needs admirably. A superb game.

Much better to play that the PSP version. People might moan about the dated graphics, but they still look great, not forgetting that the PS2 is over 10 years old now. The Wipeout games (Pure and Pulse) don't seem to work on the PSP, shame that Pure wasn't released on the PS2 also. I'd say Fusion was slightly better, but I'd definetly recommend getting this.

Fun:
Wipeout Fusion, the previous title in this series, had fast smooth gameplay, a thumping techno soundtrack (bang on!), and bright neon graphics on expansive and varied tracks. Wipeout Pulse has none of these. The game never rises about 30fps, which makes, for me at least, very uncomfortable viewing - it's like you're watching a film, and not taking part. The music is simply uninspiring and sounds like it should be playing under the boring moments in a B-movie action flick.

About the only improvement they've made is to the weapon effects, but at the cost of 60fps gameplay it's really not worth it.

If you don't already own Wipeout Fusion, buy that instead.
