I have regularly bought Sony MP3/MP4 players - this is my 8th. I prefer Sony to ipod as loading music etc is simple - just drag and drop - no mucking about with iTunes if you don't want to. The sound quality is always excellent, the onscreen menus easy and intuitive. Nice clear, bright, sharp screen. Good battery life. This one has an FM radio and a new feature I've not had before - called SenseMe, to help you choose music to match your mood. Not sure if I'll use this but it's there if you want it. The player is reasonably robust and attractive, with a bit of weight to it, though not heavy. I loved the bright blue colour, and the price was good for a 16GB MP3.
Now for the downside. I've always loved the Sony in-ear headphones with their soft rubbery earpieces which are comfortable to wear for as long as you like, and come with interchangeable buds in different sizes. So why Sony decided to abandon one of their best features and substitute the crappy things that come with this player is beyond me. The sound quality may well be good on these phones, but I'll never know because I can't wear them - they don't fit my ears and just fall out again. Good job I've got a few spare sets of the in-ear ones!
Secondly I was annoyed to find that the connector socket where the USB cable goes is a different shape from the others - more like the connector I use for my camera. It means I can't use this player with my Sony Walkman docking station/ music centre. So another significant drawback.
Lastly, more than 2GB of this 16GB memory is taken up with software etc. The first time I plugged it in I was informed by the content transfer screen that only 13.9 GB were available. At least some of this can be removed to free up some of the memory once you've downloaded the installation software and user manual - if you can. My computer wouldn't download the manual so I had to spend a significant amount of time searching the web for an online version of the user manual. I eventually found it at esupport.sony.com, having failed to get on the main Sony support site.
So to summarise. A good player, high quality and stylish. Just beware of the downsides. Enough for me to award only four stars instead of five, and I'll think quite hard before going for the next Sony player.
