Product Description

Manufacturer's Description:

26 years after WALKMAN created a revolutionary music lifestyle, the new Sony 8GB WALKMAN will now redefine it. Simply called ‘WALKMAN’, the new digital music player from Sony features spectacular ergonomic design and an exciting range of intelligent features that allow the user to enjoy music in a totally new way. Sony WALKMAN is a true extension of the user’s personal taste and musical preferences. At the press of a button, the ‘Artist Link’ function will search every artist, album and song stored on the device and offer suggestions of artists and bands closely linked to the genre of music being played at the time.

The 8GB NW-A1200 Sony WALKMAN features two new shuffle functions. By selecting ‘My Favorite Shuffle’, the device automatically selects the most listened to 100 songs and plays them at random. The ‘Time Machine Shuffle’ function randomly selects a year and plays all of the songs from that particular year that are currently held on the device. Featuring an advanced organic EL 1.5" display, Sony WALKMAN not only incorporates a range of great features, it also offers the ultimate in ease of use through an appealing user interface and fantastic visibility.

Once switched on, a mobile phone style ‘Home’ menu appears offering nine different options that can be selected via the four-way directional button. These include ‘Music Library’, ‘Play Mode’, ‘Initial Search’, ‘Intelligent Shuffle’, ‘Favorite 100’, ‘Play History’, ‘Settings’, ‘Playlist’ and ‘Now Playing’. Music can be searched in a variety of ways, via ‘Genre’, ‘Artist’, ‘Album’, ‘Song’, ‘Release Date’, ‘Rating’ and ‘Recently Transferred’, all of which can be scrolled through to enable users to find their music faster and easier. Sony WALKMAN records three years of playback history that can be searched and also features the first ever ‘Initial Search’ on a hard disc device, allowing the user to scroll from A-Z for ultimate ease of use.

alongside Sony’s new range of MP3 Players comes a new version of their music file management application software, SonicStage CP. The software enables users to download music files onto a PC and transfer them to multiple digital music players such as the popular WALKMAN® family. With SonicStage CP, music lovers can manage their music files with an increased variety of codec technologies. In addition to ATRAC, ATRAC Advanced Lossless, MP3 and unsecured WMA, the new SonicStage CP software is compatible with AAC codec, making it possible to collectively manage music files stored in a variety of codec technologies according to each user’s hardware and systems environment.

This new development makes it much easier to download as well as transfer music to a number of different music players (although WMA and AAC files with protected copyright cannot be transferred). The new software enables high-quality recordings from CD to AAC format at a bitrate of 80~320kbps. Also, with this new software package, all sound files formatted in 3gp, mp4 and m4a can be imported onto a PC.

The latest feature introduced with SonicStage CP is Sony’s "Artist Link" feature. Currently built into the CONNECT Player and WALKMAN® "A series", this new feature will be available for use on PCs with Sonic Stage CP as well as compatible digital music players. By clicking the "link" button on the Sonic Stage CP screen while playing music, the artist link window appears and randomly selects related songs for playback. SonicStage CP will also allow music-lovers to save and manually edit these selections and even transfer the data to compatible WALKMAN devices.

NW A1200 15 Nov 2007
By C. Pitt
This mp3 can be annoying as many people say with the font being too big which makes the viewing hard etc. But i think all that can be forgotten because sony's compression of songs to Atraac3plus is great, i currently have just over 2000 songs on this player and still have 3gb of memory left to add to.

I've read mixed reviews of this product, including one gentleman who couldn't find the hold switch over its years of use and slammed the unit for being accidentally switched on.

The player itself is of good quality - it looks nice, comes with a USB lead that also fits into a wall charger, and has nice sound quality. There's actually a problem with the iPod's audio design where when driving headphones it doesn't produce proper bass - Sony have avoided this trap with their 30 years of portable audio experience and pioneering of the Walkman portable tape player.

The big letdown is the awful software - depending on your setup you'll find that it's glitchy or just plain unusable. Even Sony tell you the Connect software is discontinued and to use the newer Sonic Stage application. As such, if this player was supported by iTunes or - best of all - if you could drag and drop in Windows Explorer, it would be a good 4 or 5 stars. As such, the software is that bad that it drags it down.

A handy feature of this player, and many like it, is that you can use it as a portable drive - for this feature you do drag and drop, although like the iPod, you can't play audio files transferred in this manner.

in summary, it's nice quality - although the supplied headphones are weak - and downloading the Sonic Stage software is an improvement. There's also third party software out there, like pretty much every other player, but that's for another review.

Not All it Seems... 27 April 2007
This being a Sony product and all, I was expecting a very high standard from the Walkman. It's beautifully designed and very sexy looking, but once I started to use it, I realised it wasn't up to the standard of other Sony products I've had in the past. For a start, the battery life is very poor. You can probably get 5-6 hours out of it at best. For me, this was the next step up from a Sony Minidisk player which went for weeks on one AA battery. Secondly, I also found the buttons to be very unreactive and sometimes have to press them twice or more to actually initiate a response.

A couple of other niggles include the fact that Sonicstage, the programme that comes with the player, is poorly designed and very irritating, and personally I think the volume control could be improved, as I find it to be too quiet, especially when you live in a noisy city like I do!

Finally, I find the walkman to be rather unreliable. It's rare that it malfunctions, but it has happened several times in the 4 months that I've had it. In the past it has randomly shut down, frozen and had to be reset and most annoyingly, the other day it deleted all 900+ MP3's that I had on it for no reason. I don't know if this is just mine, or other people have had the same problem, but none the less it is very very irritating!

Other than that, the Walkman is attractive, compact and the interface on it is very easy to use and navigate.
