Features include improved video monitoring, customizable window layouts, color-coded snapping, improved HDV, SDI, and XDCAM support, Cinescore plug-in support, A/V synchronization detect and repair, playhead scrubbing, drag ripple and arrange, source project editing, and auto-frame quantization.

Superior audio control:Vegas software provides the ultimate in audio flexibility, including unlimited tracks, 24-bit/192 kHz audio support, on-the-fly punch-in recording, 5.1 surround mixing, effects automation, and time compress/expand. Professional Level ProType Titling Technology:Included in Vegas Pro 8 software, this titling engine provides complete character text customization at the paragraph, word, and character levels providing control and customization parameters unlike any other titling software. Use the provided animated Collection samples as a starting point, or create your own custom animated text effects using splined paths, per -character fly-ins, advanced curves, as well as shadows, glows, blurs and gradients. The ProType Titler supports all Unicode fonts, left-to-right and right-to-left text editing, ligatures, and advanced kerning options.

Multicamera Workflow: Quickly and intuitively edit multicamera productions by specifying shots as you watch your project. 5.1 surround encoder:Output high fidelity surround mixes by encoding 5.1 multichannel or stereo mixes with Dolby Digital AC-3 encoding software. DVD Architect Pro 4.5 software also imports AC-3 files for the creation of multichannel 5.1 DVDs.

Advanced 3D video compositing: Create compelling 3D video and text effects, with control over Z-depth, plane intersection, compositing, and more. 3D motion is real-time and previewable via i.LINK connector1/IEEE-1394 hardware to an external monitor.

The included audio plug-ins can improve the quality of the audio in your project or create unique sounds. Vegas Pro 8 software supports additional DirectX and VST effects from a variety of vendors. Audio effects can be applied to all events on a track, to busses, or as assignable effects.

Broadcast Wave Format support: Vegas Pro 8 software supports industry standard Broadcast Wave Format. Broadcast Wave Format files can be opened and edited like any other audio file, or can be imported and auto-arranged on the Vegas timeline based on the file timestamp metadata.

Project nesting:Use project nesting to add a Vegas project (.veg) to the timeline and edit and apply effects the same as you would a standard media event. This feature can help you streamline your project workflow.

System-wide media management:You can use the Media Manager window to search and manage your collection of media assets so you can easily find the right file for your Vegas projects. The Media Manager maintains a database of your files, including attributes, ACID metadata, and tags that you can assign to classify your audio and video clips.

Powerful DVD authoring:Create DVDs with multiple video angles, subtitles, multiple languages, and running commentary. Apply image-correction filters to fine-tune still images and video. Filters include Brightness and Contrast, Levels, Auto Levels, Crop, and Anti-Flicker. Set CSS and Macrovision copy protection flags when creating masters. DVD Architect Pro 4.5 software also supports the latest devices, including dual-layer DVD burners.

Adobe Photoshop layer support:For the ultimate in control over the appearance of your DVD project, you can import an Adobe Photoshop (PSD) file to create menus, buttons, and more.

Multi-angle video selection:Add video tracks to allow multiple viewing angles of your DVD project. During playback, press the Angle button on the remote control to change angles. You can add up to eight video tracks for each title.

Multiple Subtitles and Audio Tracks:Add up to 32 subtitle tracks and up to 8 alternate audio tracks to aid the delivery of your project in multiple languages

5.0 out of 5 stars A Review from a reformed Premiere Pro user., 21 April 2008
By J. C. Dingsdale (North Wales) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I have always used Adobe Premiere since version 6.0 several years ago, assuming that it was the best Windows-based video editing package. However, my problems first began when trying the edit the footage from my new HDV video camera - Premiere Pro (despite being advertised as being HD-friendly) could not handle the files without conversion, which is a long process. I decided to give Sony's own Vegas software a try due to compatability with my video camera's files.

So, how is it to use compared to Premiere? The workspace layout is slightly different to the Adobe software, with more control available through the timeline itself (transitions, audio transitions, adding text, video effects etc) rather than being relegated to the 'Effects Control' window like in Premiere. This is much easier. Another good feature is the 'Project Media' tab which is separate from the 'Explorer' tab, which makes finding your media much simpler and quicker.

One of the best features I have found so far is the speed and stability of the software, which is incomparable to Premiere. Trying to edit a simple picture clipshow with some basic pan & scan effects was painfully slow and choppy in Premiere using my AMD Turion x64, 512GB Video, 2GB RAM laptop (which it shouldn't be!) but was smooth and stable in Vegas. Another issue was editing video directly off my 500GB external HDD (Premiere does not store the files itself when playing through the edited clip, but rather loads each one individually, which is a definite Hard Disk killer) whereas Vegas loads the files into the temp memory and plays them from there.

Proper support for an external monitor is also included, which works much better than the Adobe alternative.

Overall, Vegas is a brilliant package. It has all the features of Premiere but is infinitely more stable and faster too! I'll never use Adobe again, well done Sony.

5.0 out of 5 stars Vegas 8, 5 Nov 2007
By D. Evans (London) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Just upgraded to Vegas 8.

As usual - very stable. It remains the fastest way of editing video on a PC (not tried Final Cut Pro on the Mac). Works fine on HD.

And they've now caught up other editors in this realese on titling - which was about Vegas's only weak spot.

I can now officially use this software on Vista - though v7 seemed to work fine anyway.

1.0 out of 5 stars 64 bit Vegas Pro 8.1 Very, very buggy, 21 Dec 2008
Vegas Pro 8.1 64 bit version is chock full of bugs and crashes every few minutes. It has good days where it can last an hour. Other times it dies in minutes.

I am running Vista 64 bit with a 1.86 ghz quad core with 12 gb memory - so should be enough to run without issues.

Avoid like the plague until Sony get round to fixing the issues ( the 64 bit version is still very new at the moment ).

The 32 bit version seems a lot more stable even on a 64 bit OS.

*** UPDATE 13 May 2009 ***

Vegas Pro 9 is now out and the 64bit version of this works much better - so far no showstopping bugs. So if you want a 64bit video editor don't touch version Sony Vegas 8.1 - go straight to version 9.
