Put this one in your back pack! 6 Feb 2007
By Tod Baseden - Published on Amazon.com
This is a well-made, sturdy tripod. It is easy to assemble and easy to fold away when you have finished. And its compact folded dimensions are very handy. I compared the claimed specs with what I found, as follows:

Claimed folded length 14 inches. I found 13 7/8 inches.

Claimed extended height 39 inches, I found 39 3/8 inches

Claimed weight 1.8 lb, I found 1.45 lb.

When fully extended it seems a bit short, but this is, no doubt, a result of designing it to fold up so compactly. I have had sturdier tripods, but this one is certainly sturdy enough for most photographic opportunities.

Among The Best Portable Consumer Grade Tripods! 9 April 2009
By Mike - Published on Amazon.com

As a former professional Videographer and avid amateur Photographer I've worked with (and owned) the best tripods money can buy. It's a given that such equipment is a joy to use, not only from a functional standpoint but from the superb results that can be obtained. That said, most hobbyist shooters wouldn't seriously consider spending a small fortune for this type of gear even if the weight and size were practical. That's where the VCT-R100 comes in. Though it lacks the bullet-proof construction of pro models, it is amazingly light, compact (only 14" fully retracted), and plenty sturdy for the average user. Furthermore, it's 3-Way pan head is surprisingly fluid and smooth versus other tripods in it's class.

As far as possible cons go, most would be related to the fact that the maximum extension of this model is about 40 inches. That said, video shooters have little to worry about. Most modern camcorders use a flip screen (rather than a viewfinder) so angling the screen upwards easily allows you to shoot in comfort without crouching. On the other hand, photographers using cameras with a fixed (back of camera) screen will have little choice but to either sit, crouch down, or use the tripod on an elevated surface (eg; a table). In such cases, a 52" or taller model with a sturdy elevator might be a better choice (though portability will suffer as such a unit will be undoubtedly collapse to no less than 2 feet). Lastly, keep in mind that this unit is designed primarily for consumer grade equipment weighing less than 2 or 3 pounds.

As most of my video/photo work is hobby related these days, I really do appreciate the quality, portability and overall value of the VCT-R100. All things considered, I don't think you can do a whole lot better for less than $80. At $27 it's a steal!

Well made well designed, lightweight, specs on Amazon are wrong 24 Mar 2010

Bought this after reviewing other tripods including the SLIK Compact-xl.

It is lightweight, but DOES NOT feel flimsy. Everything about this tripod has a solid firm feel to it.

The locking mechanism is cam-lock like heavier tripods (the reason I chose this over the SLIK Compact-XL which has a twist lock mechanism that I have found tends to fail over time).

The technical specs on Amazon ARE incorrect. This tripod DOES NOT HAVE a quick release as the specs say it does.
I was a bit put off by that fact because that was somewhat important to me. Given I am leaving in less than a week it doesn't give me enough time to find are replacement that does. However, I will say the large knurled knob for the locking screw mechanism is very smooth and easy to operate so it doesn't take too long to lock the camera/camcorder in place. Typically the screw mechanism requires you to have small fingers and be very dexterous, or use some kind of coin to lock the camera in place (hence the advantage of having a quick release/lock)

No sharp corners anywhere, which is great so you don't have to worry about tearing a hole in your rain jacket(or anything else for that matter) because it is packed in the backpack along with your tripod!

Does NOT have a crank handle to raise the platform, which I LOVE. Nobody I know adjusts the camera height so precisely as to require a crank handle ! A quick twist lock mechanism holds the platform in place, AND there is some kind internal limit pin to prevent you from pulling the platform shaft right out of the guide tube (nice touch when you are in a hurry)

Full extended the height with the platform raised is a complete 39.5" to the platform so even for a tall person it is not a lot of bending over.

Comes with a nylon carrying case which is convenient when just going for a short hike/walk.

Would have given it 5 stars but for the fact that it does not have the quick release.
