4.0 out of 5 stars overall a great laptop 12 Jan 2009
This is the fourth laptop I've owned over the years and overall I am impressed. The screen, being 16:9, coupled with the 1600x900 resolution is nice and wide without making the laptop cumbersome to lug around. I can imagine more companies making laptops with this screen ratio in the future.

The keyboard is far by the easiest I have used. I'm not a fast typist and am prone to the odd error. The keys are nicely spaced apart with a full sized enter key.

Another good point is the graphics. I know this laptop is not billed as a gaming machine but I can play far cry 2 reasonably well. I'm not a massive gamer, it's just nice to occupy myself during down times, I haven't played any blu ray films yet but I have played a HD WMV clip through my Plasma at home and connecting to the tv via the HDMI was a breeze, even the sound came through the HDMI without any additional tweaking.

No for the negative points. I've had the machine for over a week now and it is already covered in scratches on the lid and either side of the mouse pad. I honestly cant believe how easy it has scratched. My two year old HP 6710b is in better condition than my week old vaio! Also the mouse pad is little frustrating to use. I cant quite put my finger on exactly what I find annoying about it, it might be that the left & right buttons need a definite press to click them, or that the pad feels sluggish my old HP was much better in this department.

The only other gripe I have is that all the connectors are on the side. I plug the laptop into a semi permanent desk setup with monitor, usb hard drive, speakers and Ethernet. With everything sprouting out of the side it makes the desk untidy. Even moving the USB connectors towards the rear on the side would been an improvement.

4.0 out of 5 stars A great laptop 24 Jan 2009
This is a great-looking, stylish laptop. I particularly like the keyboard, which has great feel and is very easy to type on. The screen quality is excellent, though I suspect the glossy screen will be difficult to see in bright light. The built-in trackpad is pretty good too compared to others I have used. A minor niggle is that all of the ports are on the side of the machine - I prefer cables out of the way at the back - and there is no docking station option. My only real criticism is the Vaio Smart Network software that manages wireless network profiles, which is very poor indeed. It simply refused to connect automatically to a wireless network other than my own, which I would find very irritating if I travelled with it much. But overall I am very pleased with it. I did lots of research before I settled on the Vaio, and, having used it for a few weeks, I feel I made the right choice.
