Manufacturer's Description

Explore your creativity

You know it’s time to step up to a camera that will really push the limits of your creative talent. A camera with higher resolution, enhanced image quality and more responsive autofocusing that’s light enough to go anywhere without weighing you down. The compact SLT-A65 puts creative shooting in your hands with advanced Translucent Mirror Technology, interchangeable lenses, fast continuous shooting and extremely high 24.3 megapixel resolution. Just what you need to fulfil your potential and perfect your photography.

Rapid response with Translucent Mirror Technology

Voted ‘Innovation of The Year’ at the Amateur Photographer Awards 2011, Translucent Mirror Technology provides high precision, SLR quality performance for both still image capture and Full HD movies. By replacing the mirror box used in conventional SLR cameras with a newly designed mirror box containing a fixed translucent mirror that does not need to be raised and lowered each time the shutter is released, this innovative technology gives ultra high-speed continuous shooting and auto focusing. Perfect for catching spontaneous moments in the best possible quality. With improved sensitivity, you’ll shoot higher quality photos at high-sensitivity settings. TMT allows both viewfinder shooting and live-view shooting using the LCD monitor on the back of the camera while providing Full-time Continuous AF during both photo and movie shooting.

High-speed continuous shooting at 10fps (frames per second)

The innovative SLT-A65 offers the speed and precision you need to 'focus between the moments' and shoot high speed continuous action at up to 10fps. Catch the decisive moment with full-time continuous AF. Tele-Zoom Continuous Advance Priority AE zooms in with around 1.4x magnification to keep your subject in precise focus in every frame – ideal for capturing sports action and facial expressions.

Sophisticated 19-point AF system

This camera also includes a newly developed 19-point AF system with 11 cross sensors for higher autofocusing precision. By spreading the 19 AF sensors across a wide auto focusing area, subjects are clearly captured. The 11 cross sensors track the subject more accurately than sensors with only vertical or horizontal detection. The result? Continual focus on your subject without lag or interruption.

See the difference with highest ever resolution

Despite being lighter and more compact than a traditional DSLR, the SLT-A65 includes a large, high resolution Exmor APS HD CMOS sensor with 24.3 megapixels. Shoot professional quality images with intense colour, rich tonal gradation and subtle background defocusing effects. This sophisticated sensor is identical in size and performance to those used in Sony a digital SLR cameras and more than 13 times larger than the 1/2.4" sensors found in most digital compact cameras. Noise is reduced in both the analog (pre-AD signal conversion) and digital (post-AD signal conversion) stages by an on-chip column AD converter and dual-noise reduction circuit.
Working with the sensor is a sophisticated BIONZ processor, designed to process vast amounts of information from the sensor at high speed. Ideal for handling intensive tasks such as ultra high-speed 10 fps shooting, Multi Frame NR, Sweep Panorama image stitching and Hand-held Twilight image composition. High ISO sensitivity of 100-16000 gives you the freedom to shoot at fast shutter speeds indoors or in dimly lit environments such as candlelit weddings without the need for a flash.

Smooth Quick AF Full HD movies

Catch the action, the moment it appears. With Translucent Mirror Technology, movies can be captured utilising full-time continuous AF. The high-speed phase-detection AF system precisely tracks moving subjects and with electronic SteadyShot image stabilization on board, your film will be stable and judder-free. Shoot super smooth Full HD 1920 x 1080 movies in razor-sharp detail at 50p. The large Exmor™ APS HD CMOS sensor gives outstanding light sensitivity for shooting at dawn, dusk or indoors and sound recorded by a stereo microphone on the mirror housing gives excellent quality with low noise.

Advanced Quick AF Live View

With Advanced Quick AF Live View, high-resolution image data from the sensor can be displayed in the viewfinder as well as on the LCD monitor. You choose which you want to monitor while shooting. Switching is automatic for ease of use and you can activate Quick AF Live View in the viewfinder simply by putting your eye to the eyepiece.

New enhanced Picture Effect lets you modify images by changing colours, adding textures or including special visual effects – all without a PC.

High resolution, high contrast viewfinder

See your world in perfect clarity and detail. The XGA OLED Tri-Finder in SLT-A77 is the first electronic viewfinder to feature an Organic Light-Emitting Diode (OLED) for higher resolution, higher contrast and 100% frame coverage. This viewfinder offers a wide viewing angle of 33.3° and a high eye-point of 27mm so you can shoot and review images without taking your eyes from the finder. OLED technology provides the power, contrast and response required to perfectly reproduce scenes without motion blur or residual image. Detail is superb and allows image enlargement for more precise focusing and framing.

The world’s first 3 way tilt LCD*

View images more comfortably, however you’re shooting, with the world’s first camera display that moves in three ways. Compared with conventional two-hinged displays that tilt only horizontally and vertically, this display gives you more flexibility when shooting at angles, using a tripod or from low and high positions.

This really is a superb piece of kit. It's been a while since I bot a digital slr but I waited until something really caught my eye. This was it. Loads of features. Fantastically high fps (10). I normally shoot in RAW but have found I haven't needed to. The first outing I just stood with a massive grin on my face. It's simply a lovely camera to use.

Pros
Digital viewfinder not for everyone but great for viewing your shots in bright conditions
24 MP
10 frames a second
Fantastic video- very good focusing
Takes some Minolta lenses
Great selection of features like toybox and HDR painting

Cons
Battery life could be better
Digital viewfinder - I'd check look through one before you buy it. I like it but it does take a little getting used to.

I have owned a Konica/Minolta 5D for several years. I bought it shortly before Sony bought their camera business and developed their own range based on the Minolta lens mount. I was reluctant to change to another brand as this would have meant changing all my lenses and equipment.
I looked through the details of all the Sony SLRs and came across the A65. I read all the reviews available and then took the plunge.
I have never regretted it. I have been using it for several months now in all sorts of situations and it has consistently made the best of the light/contrast/subjects etc at which it has been pointed. Pin sharp even when extensively cropped and enlarged.
I class myself as a keen amateur and often use my camera as a sketch book for later art work. The Auto settings give superb results and are ideal for those occasions when there is little time available.( The grandchildren seemed to learn to say "hurry up" at a very early age! ) That said I have used its extensive range of settings far more than I have with other cameras and find it really easy to whip through the menus, buttons etc
There are people far better placed than I to review the technical aspects of the camera but as an average user who sometimes likes to go that bit further to be more creative I can thoroughly recommend the A65.
I received the camera just before we travelled through France for three weeks and the GPS device was almost worth the cost of the camera on its own! No more pouring over maps a few weeks/years later trying to remember where most of the photos were taken.
On our return a friend asked me to take their wedding photos ( yes - I groaned too! ) as they did not want "formal" ones.

I was going to buy a Canon EOS600D to replace my trusty Konica Minolta Dynax 5D but research indicated that my existing set of lenses would fit the Sony A65. So I duly tried my lenses in a borrowed A65 and the results were remarkable.

Now that I have my own A65 it is a delight to use. Very light, well designed and all the controls are well organised - not that different from the Dynax 5D.

I especially like the screen. It gives quite good detail for its size. As you switch to each mode there are on-screen tips and hints available.

In operation it takes some getting used to - no longer a 'clunk' as for SLR mirror mechanics. The SLT is smooth and fairly quiet. With the setting dial at 'P' and an ISO of 400 (max is 16000) the picture quality is fantastic in all lights I've tried so far.

As for value - yes it's pricey but look around for offers. Because I already had lenses I keep the costs to a minimum and have a better camera than the Canon.

Drawbacks - file sizes are very large, but that's the consequence of 24Mp resolution.

If you're looking for a quality camera but don't wish to follow the crowd do consider the A65.

I chanced upon a second hand 70mm - 300mm zoom lense for the A65 (A70?) which is the upgraded version of one of my Minoltas. The perform is absolutely astonishing!!
In conclusion: I'm delighted with the camera.

After many weeks of research, I decided that Sony is the brand I would buy for my move into DSLR/T photography. Then prompted with a choice between a33, a55 & a65. A77 was discounted very early on as its way too much of a camera for my amateur needs. Finally settled for the a65 as it ticked all the right boxes and some more.

Some of the amazing features: HD video capture with built in image stabilisation and continuous auto-focus, electronic view finder, excellent still images, panoramic stills capture and various other shooting modes. Also, many other features some of which I have yet to explore. The camera feels solid and of really good build quality, the finish is of very high standard and the grip for my average sized hands feels secure.

For a starter the kit lens captures decent images. However, I have purchased a 50mm 1.8 and zoom 75-300 lens. My favourite is the 50mm.

I have now had the camera for almost a year and am totally happy with my decision. Even a year on I'm still learning about the camera and DSLR/T photography in general.

Overall totally recommend.
