You start the game in the rhythm and blues (shoes) of ex-cockney gangster Mark Hammond, who has to watch as his trouble and strife (wife) is killed and his dustbin lid (kid) kidnapped. As the game begins you tear off in hot pursuit along the impressively detailed fields of wheat(s) (streets) of London.
The driving is a notch more realistic than GTA's in terms of handling and the damage your jam jar (car) can take; this realism means The Getaway is not so immediately appealing as the GTA games, but it manages to be amusing enough since you're still allowed to run over people and half-inch (pinch) their cars.
Where the game is unquestionably better than GTA is in on-foot combat. This features much tighter controls, including two aiming modes and a wall-hugging option like that of Metal Gear Solid. No doubt Sony are also under the impression that the story is far superior to GTA's rather amorphous narrative, but it's certainly an acquired taste, featuring as it does enough non-subtle language, mockney accents and poor dialogue to make even Guy Ritchie blanch.
In terms of freedom of movement The Getaway is more restrictive than GTA--but what it loses in freedom it gains in tighter gameplay and, of course, the ability to drive on the right (i.e., left) side of the road without the Old Bill getting in a how's your father. --David Jenkins

The Getaway,

This is definitely a game of two halves. The driving sections are great, although as I'm not a Londoner the detail of the street scenery is wasted a little on me. The frame rate can get a bit choppy, but the overall impression is that you are playing on a more powerful console. However, the game falls down when it comes to the sections on foot. The controls are awful and the game-play repetitive. It may look better than GTA: VC, but it is no where near as fun. Overall, you may get something out of this if you know London well. If not, I'd stay clear and get Vice City instead.

Spend your money on jazz mags instead.,

Comparisons between The Getaway and GTA:Vice City are not really fair; they are different types of games and Vice City is actually excellent. The Getaway is a steaming pile of horse kak.On paper the game sounds fantastic and involves hooning round the streets of London in a variety of cars, shooting anyone who gets in your way and generally acting like an extra out of Lock, Stock. However, as other reviewers have stated, the designers clearly spent all of their time making the streets of London look realistic, and none on making it an enjoyable gaming experience. The controls are sluggish, missions are monotonous (drive here, kill these people, drive somewhere else etc.), cut-scenes cannot be skipped, your character gets hit once and acts like a nonagenerian, the camera gets bored and wanders off to random views and cars handle terribly. All of these add up to a totally frustrating experience; when a game's this unenjoyable, why bother to play it? And I only gave it a star because I got to drive past my flat.

This game(The Getaway)i borrowed of a friend and i was very impressed.First you are Mark Hammond an EX-Gangster of a london gang. One day his Wife is shot and boy kidnapped and you chase them and therefor the Rich storyline evolves. After 12 missions you become Frank Carter an EX-member of the flying squad(police force)and you get wrapped in 12 more missions from a more legal point of view(he is a bad boy though). The missions are amazing and thrilling.Drive any veicle you see or hijack it if its occupied. The camera controls are slightly annoying and dogey but over all sweet. The whole of london is explorable and very well detailed and recreated with much accuracy. This game as you may know is 18, this is due to obsessive swearing(offencive or not is you choice),A sick amount of violece including breaking peoples neck, shooting them in the head and gunning people down in the street but whether you do that is your call. There is also traces of nudity however but that is only at the poledancing club.of corse there is breaking the law, killing police, hijacking cars and doing ilegal missions. For the light hearted its 'water off a ducks back' but for other gamers could be the fate of them or others(but not always). Also for some is even more discusting as hammond gets beaten' up alot which some may find disturbing and on mission 5 or 6(i think but i know its called 'taxi for mr chai')shows a man screming for his life as he gets torchered by gangsters but only on 1 mission for about 1 minuit. If its guns your after there are plenty such as pistol(s),AK-47,uzi,(other various (sub)machine guns),meat clevers, baseball bats and other weapons. The cars are all realisticly different in speed, turning(control) and sturdyness. From nissan micra's to lexus this game has them.free roam can be unlocked at the immediate completion of the game.Free roam in two words:'A SHAMBLES'. but hey, some may like it and your not me so you may.i hope you like this wonder of a game and look forward to 'The Getaway 2'.See Ya!!!
