I bought a dirt-cheap Genexxa dictaphone back in 1995. The sound is a little rough, but it's bright and audible. I have a large stockpile of tapes, so I thought I'd upgrade to something a little more up-to-date and expensive, try and improve upon the sound quality.
Sadly, this supposedly mid-range product (they go for UKP70 in the Sony shop), is inferior in almost every way to my 15-year-old bottom-of-the-range Genexxa. For starters, the construction feels brittle, cheap and lightweight. This I could forgive if the sound reproduction was any good.
Unlike my cheap dictaphone, the recordings made on this unit feature a very prominent background rumble that threatens to overwhelm the voices. The voices themselves have little real presence or brightness, but retain the tinniness of a cheap microphone. Even though the product claims to be good for conferences, I can't imagine you'd pick up much more than a few feet away.
The blurb claims that the item is, "an excellent example of innovative designs that bring high-quality sound". Considering the cheaper and older device that I've been using for the last 15 years is better in every respect, I beg to differ.
