Have just received these portable speakers and first impressions are good.

No separate power source means output is a bit limited but that does not mean they don't deliver clear sound freeing you from the ties of headphones.

This unit feels solid and is very practical for travelling.

Anyone expecting an unpowered speaker to produce loud sounds from an mp3 player has very little idea about electronics. The output from a typical player is of the order of tens of milliwatts so the volume produced is bound to be low. These speakers perform well, in quiet areas only, from my Sony network walkman. They are clear and undistorted. They are well made and very portable. However do not buy if you want significant volume levels, there are many alternatives out there.

From the moment you first take these Sony speakers in your hand you will notice a difference from many of the disposable sets of speakers you have probably owned before. These units have weight, not too much, dont worry. But they contain good speakers with good magnets and surprisingly magnetic shielding so you can use them next to CRT screens without any issues (anyone have a CRT screen anymore?)

You don't see the underside of the unit on the Amazon page but its very nice with a shiny steel underside not unlike a popular MP3 player I can't mention.

There is a clever cable management system to hide the ample 8-inch cable when not in use.

There are what I assume to be bass ports-ish at the rear.

The sound is clear and the bass is excellent. This is not a ghetto blaster, it is unpowered so don't expect to wake the neighbours but it is ample enough and quality enough to listen to music and watch movies which is what I wanted it for.

I am pleased, I think you probably will be too just remember they are unpowered but that does mean you'll never run out of batteries or have them burst inside the casing which is excellent for a traveller like myself.

Look good, sound great, clever design that closes over the speakers to protect them, worth the small price and then some.

Hey, I know there are better speakers out there but get this - these don't need a separate power source! That means you run off your headphone power and are limited somewhat in power but from what I have tried - with mp3 players NW808 and NWE005f both from sony I have had fantastic results and clarity. They fold away and have a very solid feel. Very happy.

The speaker suits its purpose. The sound quality is ok, a bit tin-ny. It is advised that you do not transport them with your PC. Which means packing them separately. the closing mechanism doesn't work properly so if it is in you handbag you risk it popping open.

As most of the mobile music players are "i" something, finding accessories for your Sony product can be difficult to find.

I bought this speaker primarily because it did not require batteries but simply took its power from the ipod or mp3 connected. I was amazed by the sound quality and the volume that could be achieved for such a small compact speaker. The only downside is that the base and clip for the lead are fragile and mine has already snapped but works just fine. Highly recommended!

Initially when I received these speakers I was delighted, then reality set in. The tonal quality is actually quite good but the simple reality is that the sound has bareley sufficient volume: given that there's no battery you can't expect too much but in truth unless you are in a peaceful environment the output is bareley audible, and in my opinion a single earphone in one ear is a better option. As said below by a different reviewer my [cheap] netbook sounds much louder [even if the tonal quality is poor]. I should add that I've tried these speakers on an old [but powerful] MP3 player [Philips SA9200]Philips 2GB SA9200/05 Flash audio player that predates EU legislation that restricts the volume on personal players, and I doubt whether the output from a current MP3 player would be sufficient [these speakers are not loud enough for use on my netbook]. Some might take a different view.
