Product Description

Product Description

The Sony SLV-SE820 Video Recorder is a Hi-Fi quality VCR that combines market-leading performance characteristics with stylish design and ease of use. The Sony Smart Engine VCR family has consistently been recognised as among the best VCRs with respect to ease of use, picture quality and durability. This new model adds another level of recorded picture quality in the form of proprietary Smart Trilogic technology. This advanced processing system ensures optimum picture quality during play back as the VCR automatically adjusts sharpness based on recording quality and tape condition. This new circuitry monitors playback according to three parameters: it detects noise level, adjust sharpness and emphasises detail to maintain a uniformly high quality image on the television screen.

One of the most demanding functions of VCR operation is the programme setting for recording. The new high-end SLV-SE820 has an efficient solution for this most important handling. The Smart Dial Timer button, located of the VCR's front panel, allows any user to programme the VCR in just 10 seconds. All that is required to programme the VCR is one push of the Smart Dial Timer button and the VCR display shows the selected date, time and channel. Turning the timer button one way or the other can change each of these factors and, once completed, a final push of the button sets the VCR. All this without having to switch on the TV translates as very user-friendly.

User friendliness, durability and recording reliability are assured with the new recorder. With Sony's interactive SmartLink, connecting the recorders to your television is fast and simple. The implementation of Sony's Mecha Deck operating system provides ideal support for the new recorders Smart Engine operation. This advanced engineering provides fast Flash Rewind as well, rewinding/forwarding an E180 tape in just 60 seconds. Another enhancement found in this model is a permanent back-up facility which saves all tuner and channel information, together with timer recording data in the event of a power failure. The same system restores clock information to the VCR within five seconds of power being restored, even in standby mode.

2.0 out of 5 stars A big let-down, 17 Jun 2002
By Alan (Cardiff) - See all my reviews
There were 3 reasons why I purchased this VCR:
1 I have always considered Sony products as the best!
2 The previous model the SE810 got excellent reviews.
3 It was the top of their range.
I have been very disappointed. First of all the machine is very noisy, it produces a high-pitched whine when in use that is difficult to ignore. The overall picture quality of pre-recorded tapes was OK but tapes it recorded itself were of poor quality with a lot of noise noticable especially in blocks of solid colour.
I had to disable the Smart Trilogic function because it produced too soft a picture. The auto-tracking produced a good picture but the stereo sound kept cutting out and the mono sound (much louder) took over. The manual tracking override proved dificult to set and did not improve the stereo sound and the only way to re-set the auto-tracking is to remove the tape and insert it again. When the mono soundtrack was selected a sound similar to the noise of a walkman of a person sitting next to you on a bus was heard as well as the video sound. I think it was the sound of the tv channel the VCR was tuned into breaking through - Very distracting!
The auto set up function was very good and detected all of the 9 terrestrial channels we receive through our analogue cable box (Welsh TV channels, West TV channels and Ch5)as well as the cable channel itself. All I had to do was to re-arrange them into the order I wanted them. The Video-Plus was easy to use and the remote control was also very convenient.
There were good points to this VCR and perhaps I had a rogue machine, but the service desk of the shop where I bought in said that a lot had been returned because of the motor noise! In fact a lady was returning hers the same time as I returned mine!
For me the picture quality of a VRC is perhaps the most important aspect of a VCR, unfortunatly this machine did not live up to my expectations! Sorry Sony.

1.0 out of 5 stars Beware, 9 Jun 2002
By A Customer
...I own a lot of Sony products all the QS range and recently wanted to upgrade my SLV-SE810 for the new 820. Big mistake, SLV-SE810 last top VCR to be made by Sony. The 820 is noisy and is not as sharp as the 810. Certainly not worthy of the name or the top slot.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Few hiccups, 2 Mar 2003
I love SONY Electronics, any product i have interest in immediatly, so i decided to get rid of my Sanyo VCR and get this SONY VCR, i have never owned a SONY VCR before, but i splashed out on the most expensive!

Anyway to the point, the rewind is extremely fast, ive never seen such speed, however, it goes so fast you have to stop it before the time you want as the fast motors have to slow down, it passes on the counter about 3 mins. The VCR has a very high pitched noise among it but the Stereo option is amazing you automatically ignore it, i have the SONY DAV-S400 system and it is perfect through this.

I had A LOT of difficulty with the Record Timer, the settings are correct but the VCR does not seem to record, i turned off the VCR by the socket then turned it on again and it has been fine since. Another good thing is the automatic setup, it searches, sorts and names all the channels it finds. Plus the time is automatically set through arial signals.

I have a MONO SONY WEGA 14" TV, however, now it is a STEREO TV and it completely adds effect to live broadcast programs and films, the unit has a Phono output on the back to plug into any HIFI or Audio equipment. The remote is plain and to the point, very nice and the buttons are not scattered everywhere.

The unit has a tape remain function which tells you how much of the tape is left. The Smart trilogic is perfect, i have had no bad picture, anyway, if you dont like it you can turn it off. The Dial Timer is excellant, so easy to tape a program, you can time a program in under 20 seconds without having to turn on the TV!

The pause quality is perfectly still and you can use slow motion and go slow motion backwards. The front AV inputs are good for Video cameras, the unit has 2 Scart sockets around the back, a phono output and Antenna in/out. Oh, when i rewind a video, sometimes it is so fast it vibrates the desk! I dont know if that is cool or bad! The on screen menus are very user friendly, all in all, i love it, it has all the features i wanted. One extremely annoying thing about the VCR is that the sound from whatever channel the VCR is on comes slightly through the sound while you are watching a video, i solved this by setting the VCR channel to one one the Line inputs, i put it to Line 2, this solved it.

Good work SONY.
