2.0 out of 5 stars A dog of a machine, 15 Feb 2007
By Alan Sturgess - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
OK - so you need a video player before they become collector's pieces. This machine is OK and that's the limit of my praise. There's no express forward or rewind and if by any chance you already have a Sony TV (we have, we bought one a year ago), the remote for the video will screw up your TV in double-quick time as it tries to control both TV and video. (If you buy the video on its own, the remote comes without a few essential controls for the TV - but there are enough to cause problems). The remote has a video/TV switch which makes things confusing and can REALLY make a mess of your set up.

The machine plays new tapes very well, but any that are a bit old or have been played several times - well, expect the machine to make a real meal of it.

Almost every tape I've use in this machine, even brand new ones, start with a moan as if the tape is slipping.

One good point - it set itself up very quickly and without hassles. BUT - it has shown itself to have one strange quality. When the TV is switched on to the video channel, all you see is mush until you momentarily press 'play'. After that the channel is clear and you can cycle through the TV channels whilst viewing things via the video channel. When recording, it again shows mush, but does record correctly.

All-in-all, this is a dog of a machine and should be a last-resort buy only. Look for something else - that's my advice.

4.0 out of 5 stars Close to excellent, but not QUITE there, 5 April 2009
By M. Appleton - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I upgraded from a 710, and the 740 is better in most areas, but not all.

Starting with the obvious, the picture is outstanding with the proper tracking, and sound is as good as it can be for a VHS. I will say that a couple of tapes that played with no problems on my previous machine undergo the odd re-tracking episode, but I don't really care too much.

Since I record exclusively via the SCART input (Sky Digibox) I have encountered no set-up probems in this regard, but the recording function itself could be more responsive and communicative - I press record on the remote and recording starts roughly two seconds later with no feedback onscreen. Pausing and resuming under record more are also a bit slow, meaning you have to anticipate by a couple of seconds (which, given the fact the advert breaks usually begin and end with a sponsor's message nowadays, isn't too difficult).

The player is VERY quiet in normal operation (even the flash RW/FF), but tapes can occasionally start to "clack" for no reason I can find.

All in all, better than my outgoing VCR, but definite room for improvement - not that there will be any now ;).
