Verified Purchase
I bought the lens to use on a Sony FS700. I had opted not to get the camera kit lens which is the previous version of this model as I am more a cinematographer than a videographer and have various fast primes. So reluctantly I gave the lens a chance and am very pleased with the results.
With this lens the automated functions are now available including, auto aperture, face recognition, auto focus including spot focusing (activated by touching on the monitor), timed focus pull plus distance, zoom and aperture display, none of these are available on a manual lens.
The power zoom speeds are very similar, I would have liked a faster H and a slower L but they are different from one another and usable.
It looks like the Zeiss 35mm f1.8 E-mount lens could be next...

I already had the original Sony sel18200 that I used as my all round lens when I wanted more reach than my sel1670z offered. I was happy with the quality of that lens but wanted to try the power zoom version to see if it was better. I use these lenses for photos and videos on a Sony A6000 camera body.

This lens is ideal for videos as it has the powered servo to drive the zoom smoothly. Trying to zoom while filming using the sel18200 can be a rather jerky affair. The zoom motor can be set at three different speeds. However, none of them are as quick as on my sel18105g. Instead they vary from slow to very slow.

As far as image quality is concerned this lens is definitely better than the sel18200. It is noticeably sharper, especially at the long end of the zoom.

This increase in sharpness has to be balanced (literally) against the weight and bulk of this lens. This lens is heavy and rather bulky. The main issue is the servo motor that sticks out of the bottom of the lens. If I put my camera on a flat service it ends up pointing up into the air because of this motor protrusion. I think that it would have been much better to put this protrusion on the side or top of the lens but that may have been an issue for the Sony video cameras that this lens is primarily aimed at.Additionally, this lens is significantly more expensive than the sel18200.

Whether the extra £300 and extra bulk over the sel18200 is worth the improved optics smooth zooming will depend upon how you wish to use this lens.

Just to be clear, the reason you'd want a SELP lens in the first place is if you're using a video camera that has zoom controls (actual buttons for zooming in/out) and you really want a lens with electronic zoom - something that's quite a rarity by any standard. The electronic zoom adds weight to the camera, it is NOT quick (don't expect lightning-fast zoom from one end to another) and while it's smooth, on a cheaper camera like my Sony NEX-VG900E it's only as smooth as your pressing of the buttons, which is in stark contrast to features such as Touch Focus on Sony's more expensive video cameras (an FS700 would be nice, but I have no real need of it).

Image quality is little different to the cheaper offerings. I started with an ordinary manual zoom/manual focus lens, went to auto-focus, so this is the third lens in the series. I'd say at 1080p you really won't see much difference anyway, so I simply use the lens for the motorized capability, not that I actually need to use it that often.
