Manufacturer's Description

Step up to even more creativity

Small but sophisticated NEX cameras have been received with enthusiasm all around the world. Whether you’re a photo enthusiast or a more casual user looking to step up from an everyday compact, the freedom to use interchangeable lenses without compromising on size and weight strikes a powerful chord. New Sony lenses help you fulfil your vision and expand your creative shooting.

Use for everyday non-macro shots, take detailed portraits and zoom in on flowers and insects – all with one lens.

Capture the detail

Looking for a high quality second-lens that’s affordable and easy to use? The light and compact SEL30M35 macro f3.5 E-mount lens features a 30mm focal length (35mm full-frame equivalent: 45mm) and minimum focusing distance of 9.5 centimeters so you can really get close to your subject. Use for everyday non-macro shots, take detailed portraits and zoom in on flowers and insects – all with one lens.

Full size images

Capture objects full size on the image sensor of your camera with 1:1 magnification. This makes it really easy to shoot high quality macro close-ups of small objects in sharp, clear detail and vivid colour.

Smooth, quiet focusing

With internal focusing, the overall length of the lens remains constant for easier, more stable stills and movies. Noise and image jitter are dramatically reduced by using a linear motor that’s especially good for shooting movies. In addition, an internal stepping motor is used for aperture control so you can shoot close-up movie scenes without having to worry about noise.

Light, compact, easy to carry

No need to struggle carrying this lens. At just 138 grams, it’s extremely portable and easy to take on treks and trips. Combined with some α cameras gives a total weight of around 360 grams – an extremely light and mobile package. Its refined metal finish blends perfectly with your camera and other E-mount lenses. Easy to hold and use too with knurled focus ring.

Length: 3:16 Mins
Purchased this lens to go with my Sony NEX-5RL as the 16-50mm f/3.5-5.6 lens that came with it just couldn't get up and personal with your subjects, even when using manual mode.

At first I was a little hesitant about splashing out quite a bit of money on another lens, however I wanted those close-up shots and the reviews had been very positive, so I went for it and I've gotta say this is the best thing I've purchased for my camera so far!

I noticed straight away the benefits of having this lens, it allowed me to automatically focus on subjects much closer than the 16mm allowed me too, and even more so through manual control for focusing exactly where you want it, with sharp results.

Though the description suggests this lens is good for "Close-ups, Insects/plants & jewellery", it doesn't limit it to just these as I've taken some decent scenic shots and photos of my friends too.

One thing I almost forgot to mention is that this lens supports 49mm filters (my original lens was 40.5, so I had to repurchase the different size).

► I've included a video which shows an unboxing and photo examples, but please bare in mind I had to upload it in 360p quality as 720p made the video exceed the 100MB video limit... So the photo quality wont be at it's highest.

This lens is an excellent addition to your e-mount lens collection. Can take beautiful ultra close-up pictures and videos with precise auto and manual focusing. It provides a very shallow depth of field isolating a minute plane of focus whilst up as close as you can go to your subject, which almost touches your lens glass!!! Great buy for art enthusiasts and filmmakers alike. Just don't accidentally squash the insects when you get in close!!! Andreas

I have this lens and think it's a superb product for the quality to cost ratio. Solid metal construction, great IQ from the glass and nice size and weight too.

For under £200 you can't beat it!

This lens could easily be over looked by those seeking a fast lens or those requiring image stabilisation or confused by its macro capabilities. But let me in on a well kept secret; this lens is awesome.

First off the f3.5 might seem a little on the slow side but consider that this is usual territory for lenes of this price range. Additionally, if you are using the capabilities of macro side then you usually have to stop down the lens in any case (this is essential with all macro photograhy).

But why stop at just its macro trick. This lens is fully capable of taking some superbly sharp general photographs. Infact there are lab reports detailing it's fantastic resolution abilities. But as to be expected Pros would counter with its low corner sharpness. For me, this has not been an issue.

Check out Flickr if you remain to be convinced. I for one am still enchanted by this gem.

I have had this lens for a while now and used it quite alot.

As one might expect this lens is quite superb and delivers fanatsic results.

The construction is very good and even though the lens is super light it has the feel of an expensive well built piece of kit.

If you like Macro photography this lens is a must

I've gathered some lovely shots with this awesome lens, as I'm a big fan of insect photography, its probably best for 'still' shots, but if your patient you will capture that little bugs face ;-) i suppose its not ideal for insects because the autofocus can sometimes take its time, but like i said, i am patient, and the quality that this lens can produce is superb.
I have 6 lenses for the Sony NEX 5 and this one gets a lot of use, love it.
