5.0 out of 5 stars Sony 70-300mm f4.5-5.6 G series 21 Mar 2011
I've owned this lens for a while now, & can thoroughly recommend it to any Sony alpha user. The quality of the pro range glass blows the kit lens I had before out of the water.

Having a built-in motor, a first for me, I couldn't believe how quiet this lens is. You'll hardly notice it focusing. It's quick too, & rarely hunts.

The only downside is the size. It must be at least twice the size of the 55-200mm kit lens I replaced with this. But for the quality & quiet focus, it's worth the extra bulk.

The oddest thing is, mine rattled out of the box. It sounded like maracas. I thought I'd got a duffer, & took it back to the shop. They had another, & that rattled too. I've spoken to other people who have or have tried this lens, & they noticed it as well, so it's obviously something to do with the design, & not a fault with my lens. So don't be phased if yours does. Even weirder, when fitted to the camera body the rattle stops.

All 'round then, an excellent, quality lens. Just as you'd expect from the Sony pro spec range. It's suitable for full frame too, if you own or plan to upgrade to one.

If you have a Sony camera, you have to have this lens. It's as simple as that.

4.0 out of 5 stars Expensive ahoy! 21 Aug 2012
I bought this as my second lens to compliment the 16-50 KIT lens that I got with my A77!

I was torn between getting this and a cheaper version from another manufacturer but after a lot of reading decided to go for this one!

I did try the much cheaper Sony 75-300 (around the £200 price) whom a friend let me use for a day or two, and to put it mildly it was awful!

The lens feels very well built and even though it mainly plastic construction to keep the weight down no doubt? As well as cost? It still feels very sturdy with a nice weight to it

The autofocus is near silent and in most cases very quick through all the focal range.

It comes with a very large lens hood to keep stray light out and a soft lens pouch which is very handy and I wish all lens would come with one?

I have been using it exclusively on my A77 and finding it very good as long as you have enough light it being F4.5-5.6 this lens performs superbly outdoors!

I would not consider it if you tend to do a lot of indoor or poor light shooting?

It does have the dreaded dust collecting rings all Sony lens suffer from and they are reversed on this lens so the manual focus is at the rear which as caught me out a couple of times :-)

I have put a couple of shots to show the size of the lens with hood attached it is rather large? Also included a couple of pics taken with the lens!

My final verdict is it a very good lens for outdoor use but very ££££££ so not sure about value for money really?

My only gripe so far is I wish it was a stop or so brighter? But I suppose it would then be double the price ?

5.0 out of 5 stars A step up from the SAL75300 3 Oct 2012
When I originally bought my Sony A77 I also purchased the SAL75300, although an OK lens it did have its weaknesses, such as a lot of purple fringing at the long end.

I took the plunge and bought the SAL70300g, and its an incredible lens, solidly built, incredible IQ all through the length and looks great fully stepped down. Its a great compliment to the SAL1650 and being slightly shorter starting focal length means the intermediate gap isn't too long.

Overall well worth it, and a noticeable step up from the cheaper SAL75300

5.0 out of 5 stars A very satisfied buyer 7 Jan 2013
It*s easy to handle, it is not to big to always take it with you. I often take pictures with children and dogs running around and I found this lens gives good sharpness and nice pictures. I am an amateur but more than satisfied with the lens.

4.0 out of 5 stars Bought second hand for a safari 10 Sep 2012
Amazon Verified Purchase
Bought for a tiger safari in India and used on a full-frame a850. A huge improvement over the effectively kit lens on my a350.

Only critisism: f4.5 means not as fast as you'd get from a prime and despite the option to limit the focus to 30m-infinity, it does have a tendency to search quite slowly.

Overall though, a very good lens.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb! 21 Nov 2010
I am new to photography, having taken it up in January 2010 without any prior knowledge of the subject.

I have only owned a DSLR for seven months. ( Sony A350 )

Being female, not very tall or particularly strong, size and weight of any lens used, is a concern. I am able to carry this around all day with ease.

I am extremely pleased with the photos taken with this lens.( Some of them have been attached to this listing.)

5.0 out of 5 stars Good kit! 5 Aug 2012
By Ugly1
My interest in cameras started in the mid 70's and I have owned a few SLR's. These were all Canons. I have always been an enthusiastic amateur, but my interest in photography has bloomed since the invention of the DSLR and now SLT cameras. In the last few years I have owned three Sony Alphas a A200, A350 and have now treated myself to a A77. I have loved all of these cameras.

My Sony 70-300mm has spent a bit of time on all three of these cameras and overall the results have overall been very, very good. On the A77 the results are certainly professional quality. But you have to know what you limits are and what to expect.

It operates just fine. It may not be the same as other lenses that you have used, but in operation it is intuitive and easy to get used to. It is quiet, smooth, accurate and well made. The lens cover is huge, I have no idea why? To be honest, it does get in the way and I rarely use it.

All zooms seem to work least well at extremes. This is not unique to Sony. Unfortunately, few people buy a 70-300mm zoom with the intention of using it at 70mm. All the way through the range the lens performs exceptionally well. However, at 300mm the quality drops away a bit. Any pictures taken at this range seem pretty sharp in the centre and then degrades toward the edges. Personally, I have found that for quickly taken wildlife shots, this has quite often worked for me. It seems to focus attention, the results are certainly usable.

Without getting to technical, at F4.5-F5.6 the results from this lens are very sharp at all but the most extreme end of the range. Between F6.3-F8 the results are quite exceptional. Up there with the big boys!
