Sony
Plan your week's viewing using the electronic programme guide and use the new Easy Recording function to record a whole series at the touch of a button.
Watch your favourite programmes whenever
Today there are more TV stations than ever and not enough time to watch everything. Take control with HDD recording, a convenient way to enjoy your favourite home entertainment when you want to. Now you can plan your week’s viewing in advance, record the programmes you don’t want to miss directly to HDD and watch them at your leisure.

Large capacity to record and store
With a generous 500GB hard drive, the DC505 does away with the need for additional drives, discs or tapes. You can store up to 850 hours of high quality video on its built-in hard drive – enough for several of your favourite series.

Integrated digital tuner
The recorder offers a DVB-T tuner as standard which means you can receive FREEVIEW digital broadcasts. These offer up to 50 TV channels as well as 24 radio stations including entertainment. If a digital signal is not yet available in your area, a traditional analogue tuner is also included.

Easy to use menu
Using the eight day electronic programme guide makes planning your week’s viewing a breeze. Designed to make things as simple as possible, the new Easy Recording function makes light work of recording either single programme or a whole series. It’s also easy to browse what you already have stored on the HDD when you want to catch up with what you’ve recorded.

High quality direct recording
The DC505 boasts loss-less recording which means picture quality is maintained at the same level as that broadcast. This is made possible by recording the broadcasting stream directly to the hard disk, avoiding the MPEG decoding / encoding traditionally used by many DVD recorders. The result is a picture that always looks as good as the original broadcast.

Multi-format compatibility
The DC505 is compatible with an array of formats, giving you the ultimate in flexibility and choice. Playback compatibility includes DVD-R/RW/+R/RW and HDD. It also supports the DivX format so you can playback content from the internet on CD or DVD, plus HD photo playback. You can record straight to the internal HDD or on to DVD- R/RW/+R/RW.

Get connected
The DC505 offers a digital HDMI output socket for easy, high quality connection to your TV. Two SCART sockets allow you to connect with a variety of other devices, whilst the USB connection allows you to browse, transfer and play back music, photos or video content from a memory stick. With a single touch full contents from a Sony HDD CAM can also be downloaded to the hard drive – ready for viewing on a connected TV or for transferring to DVD.

Bring out the best in your DVDs
Upscaling means your DVDs will look stunning when played on the DC505. The recorder converts the Standard-Definition signal (480i) of DVD to 1080p and outputs a Full High-Definition equivalent resolution video signal for vivid, detailed images.

In addition, Precision Cinema HD Upscale technology generates each pixel correctly according to information received from the original source, whether film or broadcast and whether the pixel is in motion or still.

HDMI cable enabled

An HDMI output means DVDs and HD photos will look stunning on your TV, plus you can use BRAVIA Sync to control the recorder and your BRAVIA TV with just one remote.

One touch playback with BRAVIA Sync
Take the hassle out of settling down for an evening’s entertainment - simply do it all with one remote control. Hook up your Sony LCD TV via HDMI with BRAVIA Sync and you’ll find a variety of operations are possible using just one button. Just push the Playback button to turn on the TV and the recorder and it will automatically switch to the HDMI input and play content from the hard drive or from DVD. When the TV power is turned off with the remote, the recorder is turned off as well.

Low power consumption helps the environment
High performance doesn’t come at the expense of the environment with the DC505. Even though its start up speed is less than 5 seconds it has an eco-friendly standby power consumption of less than 1W.

Pause Live TV
Don’t want to miss a moment of the action? The DC505 lets you pause the action on your favourite TV shows, movies or live sports, then pick up where you left off. With Simultaneous Record and Playback, you can also watch one show and record another, making sure that you never miss you favourite shows when they clash.

Photo TV HD
PhotoTV HD allows you to connect PhotoTV HD-compatible devices from Sony and see your photos in HD resolution. It brings your images to life with amazingly detailed textures and colours.

I think its important to say that I have been a big fan of sony products for many years now, in fact almost all my electronics from TV's to cameras, hdd camcorders and even mobile phones are all made by sony. I absolutely swear by Sony products but this recorder has simply left me swearing.

Firstly, most HDD recorders on the market have twin tuners built in; that way you can record 2 channels at once and still watch another channel on the TV. In their infinate wisdom though Sony have opted for just the one!!

Secondly, this machine is so unresponsive; you press a button on the remote control and then wait and wait and wait for the recorder to respond. I'm not talking about TV guide screens uploading or anything like that either, simply scrolling through the guide from one channel to another takes a second or two. In fact, what you often end up doing is doubting whether you pressed the button at all and end up pressing it again and again and again. Then when the recorder finally catches up, you've gone right passed the channel/option you selected. Frustrating to say the very least!

Thirdly, when you playback programmes recorded on the HDD, every so often it jumps forward a second or two. When I first noticed this I rewound the recording just to see if it was a playback glitch. Nope it was a glitch in the recording and kept jumping forward at the same point again and again and again. I then presumed that maybe there was some interference in TV reception whilst the programme was recording, so tested it by recording a programme, whilst simulteaniously watching it. There was absolutely no interference on the live broadcast, but when played back from the HDD there were glitches all over the place. This was extremely anoying.

Lastly, and this one really takes the biscuit, when you series link a programme it does exactly as its supposed to and scans forward to find repeat occurences in the schedule. It then automatically selects them to record. Even better still, if you series link say Shameless on channel 4 it will ingore the same episode on channel 4+1hr as its exactly the same. Pretty clever stuff in comparison to some of the lower end HDD recorders on the market. However, unless you manually access your recordings and lock them prior to the next episode in the series showing, the next episode in the series will be recorded straight over the top of the previous one, whether it has been watched or not. Imagine going away on holiday for a week, you may think you could simply catch up with your precious weeks supply of Eastenders by series linking it, but no, no, no! Upon your return, the only episode you'd find on the HDD recorder would be the last episode shown. How dumb is that Sony??

In summary this machine is absolutely awful! Even if like me, you're a massive fan of sony products, you should still steer well clear of this and all of the other capacity sony recorders in the range. Sony you should be ashamed of yourselves!!!

    Problem machine 29 Aug 2010
    By Glenn
Being something of a Sony fanatic I was left somewhat disappointed by this machine.
Reading the Sony blurb it sounds like the real deal. It's a great looking machine, easy to set up and fantastic picture quality, however, it is as stated by another reviewer extremely unresponsive. It takes an age to change channels or select the EPG, so long in fact that it appears that the remote hasn't worked.
    It is also very noisy!
My machine was faulty from day one. Although it was easy to set up, it simply would not retain the tuning. Turn it off and everything was lost. I bought it to link up with my Sony Bravia TV, which it did perfectly, the link was so good that when the recorder lost it's tuning it totally confused the TV.
After 9 days during which time I retuned it at least once a day I returned it to the shop. The first reaction from staff was "not another faulty 505". I was informed that this particular machine was nothing but a problem, so much so that the salesman preferred not to give me another, saying "If your a Sony buff you won't want to hear this, or you'll ignore it as a salesman trying to persuade you to buy something else, but this machine is not up to standard".

good not great 6 April 2010
bought this sony after my last 2 panasonic dvdrecorders both died weeks after their warrenties passed. The pros it looks great and has a vast storage available, plus the recordings are excellent. Sadly some cons ,like another reviewer said using the remote and waiting for the response is maddening (takes ages) although all my recordings are perfect (not like last reviewer). Also connections are limited unlike my panasonics ,I had to connect my cable box to the front of my sony as my SKY box and TV are using the 2 hdmi slots at rear, compleatly ruining the display by having the front lip down at all times.(of course if your normal and have only one box (sky/cable) this problem goes away. All in all a good recorder that with a little effort from sony could have been a great one.
