Product Description

Manufacturer's Description

Featuring IQ Recording, the RDR-HX710 expands the range of DVD/HDD Recorders from Sony and is the ideal entry-level product for those wanting to improve their home entertainment experience. The I refers to the range's intelligent, easy to use controls and the Q stands for high quality DVD/HDD Recording.

The RDR-HX710 boasts 160GB HDD capability. For quality, the HQ+ recording realises the original video source signals as accurately as possible by recording onto the hard disk at 15Mbps; a higher bit rate than the DVD-Video standard bit rate.

In addition the RDR-HX710 has a newly developed D-Matrix Noise Reduction feature that diminishes 'digital noise' using three different noise reduction technologies simultaneously, depending on the characteristic of the picture.

For intelligence, the RDR-HX710 also includes original scene-detecting algorithm technology from Sony. This technology enables the DVD recorder to recognise significant scene changes and insert chapter marks using 'Intelligent Scene Chaptering'. The user can then select their desired scene easily by using the 'Visual Chapter Search' function, which displays a small thumbnail image of the beginning of each chapter. To delete a scene, the user simply employs the 'Scene Chapter Edit' function to select and then delete the scene. This process is also helped by a smoother and faster Graphic User Interface (GUI) than on previous models.

In addition the DVD recorder includes the new feature 'Pause Live TV' which allows the user to pause a live programme via the remote control. This feature means users can view their programmes with a delay or simply fast forward to catch up with the real time broadcast, thus giving consumers control over how they wish to view their programmes.

All Sony DVD Recorders continue to support the Dual RW format for the best compatibility with DVD media. They are also compatible with the new DVD+R Double-Layer format offering double the capacity of regular DVD+R dics to enable you to put over 10 hours of recording onto one DVD.

This Sony DVD recorder features a High Definition Multimedia Interface which provides a pure audio and video signal from DVD to TV. For the home entertainment buff this is digital heaven, with crisp clear images that are second to none. Featured on high-end DVD Recorders and DVD Players, HDMI brings home entertainment to an even higher level, letting you enjoy DVD-Video in stunning original cinema quality.

Other features of the RDR-HX710 include DVD RAM playback, Intelligent Chaptering, D-Matrix Noise Reduction, one touch timer recording, chasing playback and subtitle recording.

    5.0 out of 5 stars UK Manual - Help, 24 July 2006
    By
This review is from: Sony RDR-HX710S DVD Recorder with 160GB Hard Drive (Electronics)
The 'No Freevew' version of the 710 is intended for the European market, hence the European Manual.

If you do not want to spend the £8.99 and are happy to print your own manual then you can download it from here:

    http://support.sony-europe.com/manuals/manuals.asp

Just input the model etc and download the pdf file. The manual is the same for both the HX710 and UK HXD710.

Great machine, with or without the freeview.

Hope this helps others in this situation.

5.0 out of 5 stars Never Looked Back, 16 Aug 2006
This review is from: Sony RDR-HX710S DVD Recorder with 160GB Hard Drive (Electronics)
I've had this HDD unit for 4 months and have had absolutely no problems with it. Setting the timer is easy and picture quality is great. No problems dubbing to DVD either. Its great not to have to worry about looking for a VHS tape anymore when you want to record something in a hurry. The editing function is simple too. The lack of freeview isn't a big deal as I have Sky anyway. Just brilliant.

5.0 out of 5 stars Manual now included!, 13 May 2007

The comments in the other reviews (that there is no English-language manual included) are now I think out-of-date. I guess Amazon has reacted to this, as mine came with a pack of continental manuals AND a separate English one (and both UK and continental two-pin power cords).

The manual is hard work but mainly because there's so much function there - and so many choices to make. I only watch via Sky (FreeSat) - poor UHF TV signal here, and no Freeview. I recommend you set it up first to watch UHF, as if you go straight to Sky-connection you may not be able to see the set-up menus.

And getting it to work so it records automatically when the Sky box switches on (using the Sky AutoView function) was tricky: as the manual says, you MUST use an all-pins-wired SCART lead (but how do you know if you've got one?). Contact johnandgill@cole2.com if you can't make AutoView (Synchro Recording) work and I'll tell you how I fixed it (by ignoring the instructions - may work for you too!).
