Experience Balanced Armature Headphones

Sony has brought together a wide range of technologies to create the Balanced Armature Headphone series, featuring the world’s only Balanced Armature (BA) drivers optimized for music enjoyment. Because these driver units can be freely tuned, they are capable of a wider range of sound, and by combining full-range, woofer, super woofer and tweeter units, they can be layered together for a highly nuanced sound experience. Thanks to the driver’s micro sized construction and high sensitivity, these headphones are able to maximize style comfort, sound insulation, sound leakage prevention and even waterproofing, all while providing great sound quality. Sony BA headphones deliver a new high-quality music listening experience.

Double Layered Housing

The combination of Magnesium inner housing and a special ABS outer housing reduces unwanted vibration and realises smooth sound response to reproduce clear and distortion-free sound, especially in the mid to high range. Double Layered Housing Design allowed Sony to achieve superior sound quality and noise reduction.

Compact size

Sony's Balanced Armature Drivers are 40% smaller than the traditional 9mm Dynamic Driver Units. The smaller size allows a design that creates a better fit inside the ear. This attenuates the outside sounds better than headphones with Dynamic drivers, resulting in a superior listening experience.

Sound quality

Compared to Dynamic drivers, BA drivers have an even response across the frequency range, with low and middle vocal ranges standing out. The sound has a very precise feel. BA drivers can be tuned for higher or lower ranges and combined to emphasize certain sounds.

Woofer
Sony’s original sound filter structure blocks higher frequencies while amplifying lower ones. The woofer unit reproduces richer, deeper and powerful base.
Tweeter
A specially designed diaphragm, coil and damper are used to enhance playback of high-end frequencies. The tweeter unit reproduces bright and detailed high notes.

Full Range
The core Balanced Armature driver design produces an even response across the full sound range, with improvements over ordinary balanced armature unit for high frequencies. The characteristic of flat and uncoloured mid range reproduces crystal clear and profound vocal sound
Super Woofer
The super woofer unit improves playback of very low-range frequencies to provide a full, rich bass sound that can be felt with the whole body. It also harmonises each units to reproduce rich expression through all frequencies.

These are amazing In ear headphones. I spent a long time reading reviews of various different products in the £100-£200 price bracket. I eventually bought a pair of Bose IE2, these were good, clear sound but the volume was terrible on my IPod nano 7th generation, due to the high impedence of them, I had to have it on full volume and I could still here conversations in the gym. I returned these for a full refund and once again hit the reviews, where I found these Sony xba2 on the what hifi review page. They were voted "best IEM between £100-£200 in 2012". Once I bought these and tried them out I found them to be absolutely excellent. The sound is crisp and clear for vocals and decent bass when needed. I am so glad I bought these and did my research. If you want high end in ear headphones I personally wouldn't look any further than these.

---------------------------- UPDATE 12/11/14 ---------------------------------

I have had these earphones for almost a year now. They look as good as they did the day I got them, no rips or peeling edges to the cable. The earphones are not scuffed or scratched at all, seeming pristine. No creaking or movement when holding or using the in-ears. Truly fantastic build quality. I have to say, the sound still impresses, even though I have heard other pricier earphones in that time. However, I have noticed that the vocals seem a little 'further away' than I would like, but they are not actually recessed or unclear. This is something I didn't really notice at first, and isn't a problem but is now noticeable. Having heard more of the XBA-4iP earphones, I can say they seem a little more bright and energetic (but the difference isn't major). All in all, a great purchase, I can understand why What Hi-Fi has listed them as the best in ear headphones under £150 for several years in a row now.

------------------------------------ Original Review Below ------------------------------------------

After purchasing (and returning) a set of Denon Urban Raver earphones to replace my Ultimate Ears 600vi in-ears (they had a good warranty but broke down way too often), I decided to purchase the Sony XBA2 earphones. I have used many earphones of various prices in the past, but these are brilliant in quite a few ways. I have used these for around five months (at time of writing), below is my review.

SOUND:
The first thing that I noticed when using these was how balanced they were.

On purchasing the XBA-2s I burned them in for a few hours. I used an A-B test comparison. My conclusion is that they are confident IEMs. The bass is there alright, nice and tight - not face-melting - but good. The mids - vocals guitars synths are smooth, they have a greater degree of finesse than the budget IEMs currently on the market. The upper frequencies are well behaved, if a touch shy, and so as has been said before by certain other reviewers, the overall presentation may be considered restrained, a tad dark. A bit of gentle EQ can help. Imagery and width is good, although I can't comment too much as I've yet to have the pleasure of testing truly high-end esoteric IEMs to see where one can go with these type of headphones.

Reading through the reviews, and then having given the XBA-2's a decent critical listen, I'm still astounded, and also sometimes very amused, with the ease by which a majority of so-called reviewers utterly fail to grasp what actually constitutes a balanced quality sonic presentation through a pair of IEMs.

Listen to your £20-30 buds by all means; the majority of the time regardless of manufacturer, be it Senns, Denons, SoundMagics, Klipschs or whatever, you'll get a lively, gutsy, brave, but ultimately slightly lacking, immature performance that stumbles and falls before the finish line - like a cocky teenager who thinks he can mix it with the adult athletes.

Step up in price and everything changes however.

I will compare these to the other IEM's I own (Sennheiser IE6 - which are Dynamic Drivers not Balanced Armatures like these). To summarise, I will then score them on a scale of -5 through 0 to +5 (with -5 being "an absence of...", 0 being "neither too much nor too little" and +5 being "lots and lots of....")

Accessories & Fitment:
Firstly, in order to get the best out of these earphones, you really need to experiment with correct fitment. Simply sticking them in your lugholes and hoping for the best won't work. If you do that, you'll probably end up with no bass, poor sound leakage, imaging and treble.
These come with lots of different sizes of silicon tips to help you size correctly for your ears so all you need is time and patience in order to fit them correctly.
First thing I did, however, was to pack those away and get out my comply foam eartips (never leave home without them) and use them instead (so my review is done with those inserted).
You also get a nice smart "semi-hardened" case to keep them in.
However, the accessories I got with the IE6's was far better, including double flange tips and a metal case to keep them in plus a cleaning tool (remember, the IE6 retailed at around £140 rrp but the XBA2 is £40 more at an rrp of £180 so I was a bit disappointed with what was included for a "nearly £200" set of IEM's to be honest).

Fit 'n' Finish:
I think these look lovely, definitely better than the IE6's which appear cheap and plasticky in comparison.
You're meant to be able to wear these either looped over the ear or dangling down classic style. However, unlike the IE6's these have an asymetrical y-cord so I found a better fit to be straight down with the right wire looped around your neck.
