Sony's extras include a Memory Stick slot which means you can augment the 8 MB RAM, and a 320 x 320 pixel screen. Even on the SL10's greyscale display this is obviously a fine feature. There is also a reasonable bundle of free software from Sony including picture editing, image viewing and drawing tools. Sony steers clear of providing its more advanced freebies like its MP3 player. This is probably a good thing, as the relatively slow 33 MHz Dragonball processor and AAA batteries may not be up to servicing such applications.
You could also call the overall hardware design a Sony extra. This entire device is tiny--on three sides there is hardly space around the edges of the display for any casing, and the space beneath it which houses tiny versions of application shortcut buttons is far smaller than usual. The built in flip over lid provides screen protection, so there is no need to add bulk with a case. Sony finds room for its trademark jog dial wheel on the SL10's left side, and there is infrared provision for beaming this and that to other users. Power is provided by replaceable rather than rechargeable batteries so it is essential to keep a spare set.
The SL10 could find itself becoming popular among those who've thought about a PDA but are put off by the prices. --Sandra Vogel

My filofax followed me for the first week with the Clie, but I have just about overcome my fear of not having what I need to hand.
The organiser software is intuitive and "graffiti" is a doddle, if not there is an on-screen keyboard you can access through one tap. Initial setting up of names and addresses is easy: do on desktop and "HotSync" onto the Clie. I miss the filofax paper address book - finding a contact details seems to take longer electronically - but I guess speed improves with practice.
The range of software available for download (and with free trials to see if you do like/need it!) is truly incredible. If you're not convinced browse the Handango web site and see what I mean. Games, utilities, professional software and simple gimmicks are all there. Try the American version of Monopoly!
Synchronising with desktop/Outlook is SO easy as is loading up downloaded software (the instructions on Handango are perfect) and the on board memory of 8Mb seems fine to me. If I need more then the Sony memory sticks are readily available.
I may in due course move onto a more advanced Palm/Clie, but to get me interested and away from Filofax this couldn't have been a better choice. At this price it is a consumable you can afford to try (but worth buying the screen protector for peace of mind if nowt else). If you're after a basic "suck it and see" pda then this is a great model.
I really liked the replaceable batteries - it's so easy to get AAA's on the road and there's no hunting around for a power point. Battery life was very good too, especially as I use it a *lot* for mobile comms, via the infrared link.
As something of a road warrior I was very pleased that it's compatible with both my Nokia 6310i and an old Dell Latitude, again via the IR port. I later changed the Dell for a Toshiba 1110 running XP Home, and everything still worked as intended.
I use the built-in mail software to send and receive mail with my ISP's POP3 and SMTP servers: I registered a copy of Mantramail to do this.
Sony also included some interesting software, including PGpocket which allows you to display and organise pictures. The extra speed of the SL10 along with the high-res screen makes this a very powerful package and there's also a hook into the Clie Paint application. Documents-To-Go is also included and is *very* useful.
I should also mention the Memory Stick facility - this is a great feature even though it's proprietory to Sony. I got a cheap deal on a 32Mb and can store lots of pictures on it as well as several complete backups.
On the down side, the accessories seem to be very expensive, although typically in line with other SOny products. The SL10 is supplied with a semi-rigid flip front cover (a bit like a spiral-bound notepad cover) which does a fairly good job of protecting the screen while it's on your desk, but wouldn't be much use in a bag or case. There is no cradle, but Sony include a USB cable, which is fine for me, but maybe not for others. One thing that's missing from Sony's accessory list is an 802.11 card - this would turn the SL10 into my ideal accessory.
All in all, it's a good all-rounder, and is cheap enough to take on the road without getting too upset if it's lost or dropped.
