Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review
Sony's PEG-SJ22 features all the hallmarks of classic Sony design; while not going over the top with the range of included applications, it does represent good value for money.

Anyone wanting to spend less than £150 on a PDA has until now had a strictly limited range of choices; however, Sony has addressed this with the release of the SJ22. The overall size and weight of the unit is diminutive, and it should slip comfortably into most pockets. The hardware is barely larger than the screen, which at 55 mm x 55 mm is the same as most Palm PDAs. A few millimetres on each side and at the top of the hardware are all the casing allows, with a little more than 20 mm at the bottom to accommodate four application shortcut buttons and a tiny rocker for scrolling around. This latter button is a tad fiddly to use, but there is a jog dial wheel and a Back button on the left side of the casing, which between them make the rocker pretty much redundant.

Running Palm OS 4 and driven by a Motorola Dragonball VZ running at 22MHz, the Clié PEG-SJ22 has adequate power for most general PDA users. Its 16 MB of RAM should accommodate most contact lists and diary databases, and if you need to add more memory there is a Memory Stick slot. The 320 x 320 resolution display is clear and easy to read, and battery life is competent for a Palm at this price, with Sony quoting up to 12 days for the average user who makes 30 minutes of usage per day usage with backlight set off.

Sony provides a smaller range of applications than you'll find on some of its more expensive PDAs, but the range is nevertheless fairly good, and includes PhotoStand and PictureGear Pocket both for viewing digital images, the Kinoma player for watching digital movies, CliePaint for drawing your own graphics and World Alarm Clock. --Sandra Vogel

4.0 out of 5 stars Sony Clie PEG-SJ22, 5 Jun 2003
I have just bought this excellent PDA. For the price this unit has pretty much everything you would like to expect. The software is easy install and allows you to be syncing with your new PDA within minutes. The set-up of the PDA itself is also extremely easy, simply set your country and calibrate the screen and you are away. This model contains the basic Palm applications including date book, memo pad and to-do list. Sony has also installed it's own suite of applications as standard. Picture Gear Pocket when used with its PC accompaniment Picturegear Lite is very useful for showing pictures that are available on your PC. Kimona, a program that allows you to play videos on your PDA is very good, from the example installed as standard (dolphins) you can see that considering this device's processor is running at only 33Mhz video playback is very respectable. Coming from that point it is worth mentioning that so far programs seem to start very quickly on this device. Unfortunately no games are included as standard however you can get free Palm software from the Internet, which is easily installed using HotSync.

These are my only criticisms with this package:
Is does not include a cradle which means when HotSyncing/Charging it has to just sit on the table. Secondly it does not include Documents To Go (this allows you to open Word, Excel and PowerPoint files on your handheld) but both of these items can be purchased from Sony and Dataviz Inc, respectively.

In conclusion this is well worth the money thanks to a well rounded, high quality product (especially the screen) for a great price. I definitely recommend this piece of kit.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good for a first time buyer but don't buy it new, 11 Dec 2003

I am new at using PDA's and bought the Sony Clie sj22 within the last month. After significant deliberation at how much I was willing to spend on a PDA as a first time user and what was available I opted to buy a second hand PDA. I had seriously considered something like the Zire, which was functional but cheap as well. Having said that, it is not a colour PDA and for the same price I decided to buy a second hand clie instead. I would only have paid up to about £80-90 on this sort of PDA but above this, I'd probably have gone for the Tungsten E instead.

The Sony clie was enough not to keep me bored as it had some room for expansion, it was in colour and it was at about a similar price to the some of the 'greyscale' PDA's. Essentially, I didn't mind having a second hand one as I knew that if I liked using a PDA and used it enough, that I would be upgrading soon anyway. However it was cheap enough that if I didn't use it as much as I thought, it wouldn't be the end of the world.

The SJ22 doesn't have 'Documents to go' which would have been useful to read/amend word/Excel/Acrobat files but was not essential for me. I only really needed it for contact, to do list and calendar. All the software you need is there. It may not be the best out there and Sony are renowned in my books for the lack of compatibility with other brands/items (e.g. you can only use a sony stick memory), but if it will do what you need. If you already use Outlook as your calendar regularly, I'd suggest getting some other PDA as it's likely that you'll need to Sync with it and it's also likely that you're pretty organised (or at least try to be). It's a sturdy machine and fits in my pocket, but it's not as slim as some of the newer models (of course considering it's now discontinued). Me? I only needed it for personnel reasons and don't use outlook, so this PDA does me fine for the time being. If I use it enough I'll probably upgrade to something like the Tungsten E. If you're a first time buyer it's ok if you don't mind a second hand PDA but don't get it new. There are better ones out there for the price.

3.0 out of 5 stars Clie SJ22, 30 Oct 2003
THe Clie is a nice piece of kit, and had it not been for the Pocket PC revolution with Microsoft providing the OS, it would have been brilliant. But, bearing in mind the similarity in price between this and, for example, the low-end iPaqs, It doesn't really shine. THe Palm OS is OK but quirky compared to MS stuff. The basic package comes with a few apps, but nothing to compare with the PocketPC stuff. So it's necessary to buy something like DocumentsToGo for Office compatibility, another £40.

To sum up, my Clie will sit on the shelf with the other gadgets while I use a new PocketPC for everything else.
